So it looks like Amazon has come out with an AmazonBasics full synthetic motor oil. Other than this very basic test video I haven't really seen any detailed comparisons. Has anyone here used this stuff in their C5?
People like to make engine oil sound more complicated than it is. If it meets the ratings specified by your engine manufacturer and some basic testing shows it works well as a lubricant, then it will work well in your engine.
If it meets the ratings it's good to go and will work fine in a healthy engine.
BTW the utube vids of screwball tests mocked up in some guys backyard are worthless. Those 'tests' have little to nothing to do with how an oil behaves at temperature in an engine.....
You can generally get a 5qt bottle of Mobile 1 0W40 'Euro' full synth at walmart for $25ish, then get $12 back on rebate... so that is what I do and always recommend. Great stuff, cheap.
For all temperatures 5W-30. If you don't start your car below zero, 10W30 can be used according to the manual. I use 10W30 because I don't start mine below 40 degrees. It's a lot quieter at startup.

Amazon oil is identical to Walmart's SuperTech brand...both are white-labeled and made by Warren Oil Company.
They're actually considered good oils but more for everyday cars, for spirited/performance driving I would do a litter better.
Don't forget Mobil has 5 quart full synthetic jugs at Walmart for $24, and then $12 rebates each quarter, making the 5 quart jugs $12, can't beat that for great oil.
if you want to nerd out on oil, the better place to ask this question and do research is on the forums at www.bobistheoilguy.com

It still is.
Some people just choose to run different oils. In my old 98 C5, it has a supercharged 383 and they told me to put 10w-40 in it. I've sold the 98 and now have a few 5 quart containers of oil I don't know what to do with.
I now just run Mobil 1 5w30 in all my C5s, even the supercharged one. If I'm wrong in doing so, please tell me why.

Not wrong.
I just found that my C5 was quieter at cold startup(+40) with 10W and figured quieter is better. They are both the same at operating temps. I am guessing GM recommended 5W to be safe because it covers all conditions.

GM recommended 5W-30 because it boosts gas mileage figures and the CAFE standards were in full effect. I would be happier with 10W-40 in the warmer months. Many new cars specify 0W-20. With a 20000 mile change interval. No thanks....

5W30 and 10W30 are both 30 wt at operating temps. 5W flows easier at startup in lower temps. Synthetic oil has a lower coefficent of friction leading to better gas mileage.
There have been many threads on this. Yes, the amazonbasics oil will work. Yes, it's made by a well-known company that sells under other store brands, but that doesn't mean it's identical. The youtube video is not even remotely scientific in testing the oil, but that's okay.
