It is America's Sports Car...something I take a deep amount of national pride in knowing my fellow countrymen have produced some fantastic works of art over 8 generations now. As a small boy, it was just something I've always been attracted to and has never lost it's luster, (knock on wood). I knew even then I was destined for ownership at some point or another, and it came at 26. Now at 52, it's been everything and more I could have hoped for. It's not just a car....It's a way of life!!
My answer is price/performance. Had a bunch of muscle cars from the sixties followed by six C3 Corvettes. Drove them all for several years and sold them to break even or make a profit. Took a break and tried a C4 years later and finally a C5 vert. Don't expect to break even on this one after seven years but am happy with good performance and a small investment. No regrets, no expensive mods, I'm not an exhibitionist and don't want unnecessary attention so the chrome bling and loud exhaust are no longer a priority.
This is my first Corvette. I'd never even sat *** in a Corvette before but I've always been drawn to them. Even though we're generally Mustang people I've always had this fondness of the LS engine to boot. My last car was a 2005 GTO that I had for about 8 years and was decently modified. If I would have just bought a Corvette in the first place.
I have found for myself I like to own cheaper cars that are fun and fun to modify guilt free. I can beat on them (not abuse) and just have a good time.
Sure I could own a much nicer Corvette or other car, but I always end up babying them and NOT having fun with them. I'm not loaded by any means so screwing around with a 50k dollar car or more just doesn't sit well with me.
I am a builder and a driver, not so much a hey look at me er.

For me growing up as a kid in the 70's, it was Hot Wheels imagination of owning one for real. Plus, I happen to be around quite a few people who owned various gens. So, when the C5 came out, I pounced. Almost 22yrs and 221k mi later...no regrets.
Magnificent V-8 sound (especially with aftermarket exhaust). Fantastic bang for the buck. Gorgeous body style(s). Brilliant handling/cornering. Thrilling acceleration and amazing top speed, especially when supercharged.
Why do you own anything? Because I want too and because I can. People can’t and won’t ever understand owning a corvette. For me it goes back a long way to the 70s cars. Loved them, couldn’t have one. I was luck that when I could it was a C5. A brand new one.

I never ever thought about owning one because I thought they were to exspensive then when I bought my Acura I noticed nobody wanted cars and the prices are were ridiculously cheap and noticed in my book how beautiful the C6 and C5 are when done right and because most are garage queens selling for a great price and cheap to insure it made sense.
I realize now I really don't own a Corvette in my book because it's an AUTO so I need to go find a stick.....
The replies here are kind of funny because everyone automatically assumed that the person who asked was jealous or malicious in intent.
Maybe they asked why they owned a Corvette because they wanted to buy one, too. Or because they have other sports cars and are interested in a comparison.
Not everything in life is a "I have one and you don't" proposition. So much hatred and silliness.
As for my real answer, I would say I own the particular Corvette that I have because it was a deal too good to pass up. I've always been interested in them and wanted to own one, and I saw this as an opportunity to live a childhood dream.
Oh - and it was cheaper to insure than my 2000 Buick Century that I had before. Major upgrade.

I believe most of the answers here assumed the person was asking out of spite or jealousy because we’ve all had that conversation once or twice from people who are jealous or spiteful about the corvette. Now not everyone is like that but it’s pretty easy to tell by the way it’s asked. As for me, I grew up around family that owned corvettes and when my Dad took me for a ride in my uncle’s 69 big block on the back roads of Nebraska when I was 13... I was hooked.

Oh I don't disagree, but I don't try and live my life that way. With no context, it's pretty crummy to think everyone is out to get you.
I get stopped at gas stations pretty regularly which always make me chuckle. I'm under 30, but I paid less for the car than most people will pay in car payments this year alone.

Since I was a kid, it's just one of those things you want but can't have until you grow up. Had my first (C2) when I was 20. Now in my 70's and 6 more, still have one. I guess it's a thing..........
