Default 99-2000 Steering wheel position sensor

Anybody know where to get one for less than $400? It seems GM stopped making them and I'm having trouble paying a bunch of money for a used part that costs about $500 to have installed. Currently I have the sensor unplugged which disables the active handling and traction control.

Thanks

Unfortunately that’s the going rate for them these days.

I bought one a few years after I bought my 99 in 2010. It was NOS and I think I paid $275 back then. I haven’t had to use it yet but as you have experienced, you never know when. I haven’t searched for one in years but I would just keep looking as there are probably some more out there that just haven’t been offered up as yet. I would have a hard time paying big bucks for a used part that is prone to failure.

You would think someone would cash in on this market. Lots of parts stopped and no after market!!

There is a business opportunity for someone here. How does this differ from the later ones? Maybe swap the steering column and an adapter harness? Anyone have a bad one I could reverse engineer?

I’m sure the engineering is pretty simple. There must be a reason that these sensors and ebcm’s don’t have aftermarket production.

GM may own the rights to them and they want to much to let someone else get some money.

i think you may be right. There is someone on this forum who claims to be a c5 original engineer that designed the car. Hopefully he or she chimes in.

Turns out that 3 aftermarket companies sold them in the past, they are all discontinued. Perhaps they bought from the OEM supplier. I found a lot of similar looking sensors that I'm sure could be made to work. My '01 sensor is still available AFAIK but just thinking ahead.

Good luck and please let us know when you have it solved. This issue came up last week in a “stock up on parts” post. As you likely know, this and EBCM haunt certain C5 years. I was advised by a seasoned forum member to be patient, keep looking and have the cash ready when the parts appear. We hope!

I have seen them in the parts for sale section every now and then but the prices are up there. It’s what happens when parts are discontinued and become hard to get. Good luck finding one.

Someone here took one apart not long ago. I think the innards are "a plastic ring, carbon plated, that conducts electricity." There is a wiper that rubs on the ring - and when it burns through the carbon down to the underlying plastic its game over....

The signal type changed starting in 2001. Prior the SWPS received an analog signal. Starting in 2001 it received an electrical signal. They look similar at first glance since they're encased in the same sort of part but all the logics and functioning is different. More cars used the later 2001-onwards type in GM's line up so they continue to make the SWPS for later C5s. The earlier SWPS was more C5 specific.

It's either $500 for a used part, or do the full EBCM/ABS/everything swap detailed in the sticky in Tech that both updates everything to 2001-onwards and allows you to use the later SWPS.

Guess I was lucky in finding one from a wreck for $50 4 months ago--they removed it from the steering wheel. So far so good.
