Good morning all. Little confused here. I’m about ready to change wheels on my 2003 corvette and decided to read up on the procedure. First I contacted po and confirmed the current tps were all changed last year. Good to hear. Also might mentioned all work as they should. Now reading up on this I see there is a long reset procedure, some mentioning special tool to reset tps. Well heres the thing.
1. if you reuse the tps from one wheel and replace it on the new wheel in the same location of set of 4 should there not be any problems? Other words, remove sensor from drivers front wheel and replace it on the drivers new front wheel. Would this not work? Along with this procedure does the battery need to be discounted? I’ve read that if battery is disconnected it will remember the last code for each tire. If this is true then the above procedure would work if you disconnect the battery?
If you replace them on the same position you should be good to go. There is no need to disconnect the battery. The sensors go to sleep when not moving. If you do need to re-learn them the special tool is a $1 magnet and the procedure is easy.
Thank you jcgunn for confirming my thoughts. Appreciate your input. Have a good day. Rich
Easy procedure with a circular magnet placed around the valve stem if what you are going to do with the tpms transfers doesn't work...maybe takes 5 minutes to do the procedure...
Two words of caution. The reset with a magnet only works on OEM style sensors, which are made by Schrader. There are others on the aftermarket that do need a tool to reset. If you are in touch with the original owner, try to find out what kind of sensors were installed.
Second, any strong magnet will do. On my aftermarkets wheels, the spokes were too close to the valve stem to fit the circular magnet that Tire Rack supplied in there. A quick visit to Lowes yielded a pack of small but powerful magnets, that could be "wiggled" into the right spot - in my case, I reached around behind the spokes and it worked fine.

I agree. Not a hard procedure if you do have to reprogram the sensors.
