Default 2001 Vette

Update:
New member here and I been asking a few questions about buying a corvette.

Well the other day I put a deposit on a 2001 vette. Buying from a dealership at $17,000 with 42,000 miles. Very clean vehicle both inside and out. There even is no wear on the bump out part of the drivers seat. The vehicle spent most of it's time in California and a little time here in Ohio. I'll try to post a picture next week went I get it home.

The car has 6 small chips in the paint, a couple around the front bumper and a couple by the convertible top and one near the rear bumper. What I'm surprised of it has no chips in the rockers panels and fender wells. The paint has not been repaired in any way that I can tell and I use to paint cars so I have some knowledge of the process. The color of the paint is pewter and that is very hard to spot paint.

One question is that I noticed from other pictures of 01 vettes there is no body molding running along the front fender or door and this one has that molding. Was there an add-on that year or has this molding been added-on by an owner?

Welcome and congrats on the Vette. Not sure about the molding for the 01 model year but I'm sure one of the elders will pop in with their wealth of knowledge.

Just a body side molding on with double stick tape. If you like it leave it, if not it is easy to remove. Most don't leave much if any difference in the paint from sun fade. My preference is no bsm looks cleaner to me.

Congrats and welcome to the Corvette forum
The BSM (body side molding) was an option. Of the five C5s I've owned, 2 had them and 3 did not. I'm starting to prefer the C5 without them but too afraid to take them off 20 year old paint, there has got to be sun fade

My '01 had the body side moldings, but a previous owner apparently did not care for the look and removed them. According to my window sticker it was a $75 option.

My ‘00 has them and I like ‘em. The C5 looks great either way albeit “cleaner” without but I like the extra protection. I’ve read that fishing line can be used to separate the moulding tape from the panel. Lighter fluid is an inexpensive way to loosen/dissolve sticky residue. Ultimately it’s your call. Congrats and I hope you get it!

Yep, the body side molding was an option on the car. As stated, double sided tape holds it on, but after this many years, there could be some fade in the surrounding paint shoud you try to take them off.

Thanks guys,

Is there anything on the market to protect paint chips around the fender rims and rocker panels or is this something I shouldn't be concern with?

I think this depends upon your driving preferences, frequency of use, road conditions and wallet. My ‘000 has some mars and chips but I follow advice given on the forum; drive and enjoy your vette. I detail it often and it looks impressive. That noted, XPEL “clear bra” or ceramic coating were also recommended for paint protection. Here’s the weblink, others will have insight on the product.
