Is there a sensor for the speed and where is it located? I'm assuming on one of the wheels. There's always a lot of talk about different wheel and tire sizes, but I'm not sure what is best to do to keep the speedometer accurate. I still have the stock wheel and tires sizes, but am considering changing at some point.
In addition to the vehicle speed sensor mentioned by Stingroo which is a toothed wheel on the rear drive ring gear, each wheel has a similar but smaller wheel speed sensor in each wheel hub. Wheel speed sensors are used for many things including anti skid, traction control and active handling.
If the OUTSIDE diameter of the rear tires is not changed, a variety of wheel/ tire combinations can be installed and the speedometer will still be accurate. It is when the outside diameter of the rear tires is changed that a reprogram of the PCM would be required in order to have an accurate speedometer reading in the cockpit. Some larger diameter wheels can be installed with lower aspect tires and have the same outside diameter as the stock wheel and tire combination, thereby not affecting the accuracy of cockpit speed readings.
