Other people have posted that the HUD works good with a non HUD windshield. Do a search and you will find out from people that did what you are asking.

I retrofitted a HUD to my 2001 Z06. No special windshield, and the HUD is plenty visible except when I wear my polarized sunglasses.

^^ This

I have a car that the last owner installed HUD on. Only problem with regular windshield is the HUD is dim in full sunlight. It's fine otherwise.

Install the HUD then decide if the image it sharp enough for you, then go from there. FYI, a HUD windshield is in the neighborhood of $1000.

My car came stock with a HUD and it's still hard to see with full sunlight and/or polarized sun glasses!

I have a 98 Coupe and no HUD. I would like to have it but was informed that it not worth the expense incurred. Do you recall what the total expense was? Thanks

The HUD will work with a regular windshield. There have been a number of threads posted about this and they should come up using the search feature.

Can someone share the basic difference with the HUD windshield - is there some polarization on the glass or something that picks up the HUD output ?

My guess is that it is either factory tinted just a hair darker to make the HUD brighter by contrast, or is polarized to not deconstructively cancel out visible light produced by the HUD: the whole idea of polarization! Well, to either cancel or not cancel..
As an experiment: Preferably on a sunny day, put your polarized sunglasses on and look at the HUD. Turn your head 45% tilted, and your HUD might get brighter or dimmer. You are actively rotating the molecules in your sunglasses to either force the incoming-light to resonate one way or another. Modern 3D glasses actually work on a principle of this as well

just installed the Hud in our new project car (01 Z06) 250.00 ( new Bezel) for all the parts needed from Vettenuts, very easy mod to do (for me anyway) and the stock windshield works the same as our other Vettes with the factory Hud !!!!

Default HUD pad

If someone is interested. I have the Top Dash Pad
From a former c5 friend car. It in perfect condition with the HUD cut out.
I am willing to trade or sell it. I have no use for it. I'm looking for a driver side under pad. Will discuss shipping.

I think it's different for a '98 because you would have to get a later instrument cluster.

But... I went fairly extreme on the deal hunting and these are the prices I paid: $110 projector, $27 control switch, $28 harness, $27 dash bezel. $192 total.
