My fairly new console is already peeling. Is there an easy way to remove the coating and just leave it as black plastic. It actually looks like it would be a better match as well.
Sorry to say there's no "easy" way, but it looks like you could essentially peel most of that off. Then you could try hitting it with some dish soap and a soft-scrub sponge (like what you use for teflon pans). Then rub it down with 91% isopropyl alcohol to get any residue off.
If you want to repaint that console, you have to prep it with a Scotch Brite style scuff pad and apply some adhesion promoter for plastics (Bulldog or Duplicolor are two brands you can find at Pep Boys) before any paint is applied.
I've done this project on my own console with good results, My Dark Bowling Green console on the left that I painted, original textured version for comparison. Preparation is everything when it comes to applying paint to plastics.
Take your time and know that it might not be easy, but it will be worth it!
Hope this helps!

You mean like the original junk in my car that is broken or cracked in about 40 places? LOL
Yea that one. Obviously you don't know how to look after, go ahead spend your two or three hundred on aftermarket crap. I still have the original on my 2002 not a mark on it. Knock yourself out of

That looks really good, and the paint match looks spot on. Nice Job.

Congrats on a great job. Luckily mine sill looks like new.

The OEM one from my 2001 with 41k miles was flawless except some peeling right where a right knee would rest on it while driving. This is a known flaw of the OEM console, just like peeling/crazing of the transparent top. Just because you've been lucky with your parts doesn't automatically mean the thousands of people with these problems don't know how to take care of their car. Can't we all just get along?
If he sends me the peeling one I can save him a lot of $$$.
Speaking of sending, any update on when you'll be sending my two pieces? No hurry as the virus put a damper on any upcoming car shows I did get the cap, thanks!
I think I solved the problem so thanks to being quarantined I saved a few bucks.
Took a while but I finally got all that film off. Newly finished, sheen is pretty close match to existing vinyl too. I used a high quality flat black paint.
