Hi all! I've been stuck home working remotely while home schooling / talking care of two kids. Feeling stressed, and with a break in NY weather I pulled out the Vette. Made it a mile then thought I blew it up. Long story short...the harmonic balancer separated, slid forward to where it hits the power steering rack.
Parts and tools are on the way, and my weekend is blocked. Wish me luck!
My parts should be here today. Hopefully I have new harmonic balancer on by this weekend. My just started to wobble. I'm changing it before it looks like the op balancer.
Must be contagious. I noticed Friday night when I was noticing mine running a little hot and checking my fans that my balancer has quite the wobble to it. The old girl will be getting a new balancer, thermostat and coolant flush this coming weekend.
Prior to the separation - did you have any wobble?
No issues until this year. Had a belt chirping but thought it was due to storage. Went away after warming up. Checked fluid and such, took it for a drive and boom. Bad burning smell like a clutch, then metal on metal grinding and banging. Scared the poop out of me.
Mine has been wobbling pretty good since i bought the car little over 2 years. I've marked the balancer and been keeping eyes on it for separating. So far no separation. I know I should get this done before it fails on me.
Owning a automobile is more than wash
and wax. Even a new one, should be, inspected
every time you drive it. I know, at least check
things out, once a month.
Good luck
i had mine done at G&P automotive, everett, wash. new powerbond #PB1117SS balancer installed, replaced crank bolt, crankshaft front seal, power steering hose and fluid, 3 days in shop, labor $556.40, total was $1183.03. that included a 2 year 24000 mile parts and labor warranty. without a shop, tools or even a concrete floor, that was my only choice. car feels great going down the road. i wish you the best in your search and decision. considering the damage that can occur, plus the downtime it is well worth the money and effort in research to get the job done.

2 years ago I noticed a squeak and replaced my belt but then saw a wobble on mine, Bought a new balancer off Summit, scheduled an appointment at my dealership and got it done in one day. I normally do the majority of my own work, I have a lift and the tools but having to drop the steering rack and then needing to perform the torque procedure for the new balancer bolt I decided to watch someone else do it and save my back. No regrets and no problems since.
So I'm done taking things apart, and get to start putting it back together tomorrow. Couple key notes...taking out the rack wasn't bad, but pulling off the balancer and removing the seal about killed me.
The second picture shows how after several attempts I removed the balancer. I stuck the male end of a 1/4" extension into the removal tool bolt, and pushed the long rod from the Chrysler kit I rented from AutoZone down the crank shaft
