Yes, it can do that and give you a bad search. The best way here is to pick a forum and search by the forum to weed out hits you do not want. The advanced search feature might help weed out bad searches through more filters.
The way I like to do it because of what you mentioned is to use Google flags in google search in the chrome browser. For instance.. "search forums" site:corvetteforum.com
Google search will search exactly what you type between the quotes. It won't weed out wrong forum searches, like you searching in c5, but it returns c3 searches. but you will find what you are looking for in the list with your exact search you want. Works way better for me.
It also might help to select tools on the right in the search menu and select the timeframe you want so it doesn't return really old responses if you don't want those.

I found the search option on this forum to be "poor". When I need information I use google and it frequently will lead me to the right place on this forum (or others like u-tube). Personally I gave up on using the search feature here. Good luck.
It helps to use the obvious parameters when searching here.
Go for the 'advanced search'. Use search terms that are not too broad nor too restrictive.
If you'd like to search through the chaff put quotation marks around search terms of more than one word.
You'll probably want to restrict your search to specific forums. For instance, if you want to do 'C5 General' and 'C5 Tech' click on the 'General', hold down the shift key and add 'Tech'.
It may not matter to you but Google saves and sells your searches even when operating in Incognito mode.

All good tips. I have found the search function works, but it does take some experimenting with the search criteria wording to really narrow down the results you get.
