Default C5 Steering Wheel Sticky

What is the cause of the material covering the airbag area getting sticky.

What is solution? Can it be cleaned? I tried Simple Green and a good scrubbing. Helped a little.

Thanks in advance.

The people at C&S Corvettes seem to have a solution.

I used this exact bottle bottle of purple power and one microfiber towel. Took about 20 minutes of elbow power.

Did not have the sticky problem but from what I read on previous post, the cause may be from using some protectorates that chemically react to the covering. I only use a soft hand soap and water solution to clean the interior. No protectorates.

Mine was stickey as well. I used amonia and one of the green scrubbing pads and it looks great.

I used hand sanitizer to get it right off, I soaked the rag and rubbed with a cloth. https://fabersanitizer.com/collections/hand-sanitizer
If you have a Ollies by you, you can get a 1lt bottle for $6.99. https://www.ollies.us/currentflyer/flyer.html
80% Alcohol and with other ingredients, pours just like regular alcohol. Did not change color of cover

it’s actually outgassing of chemicals from the airbag vinyl which is a different vinyl. Again, the lemon ammonia trick worked perfectly, using clean rags to wipe it on/off.

Today I tried glass cleaner (trade name omitted) on my 04 which seemed to work temporarily but the stickyness returned in a few minutes. Maybe it was the diiuted ammonia in the cleaner? So, this did';t work for me - will try lemon ammonia next to hopefully get a permanent fix before moving on down the list. I'm wondering if there's a clear spray we could coat the sticky surface with - more thoughts? I've written the "Tech Nerd" column at Corvette Magazine, who may be familar with a solution. I wonder if someone at the assembly plant or maybe from the airbag manufacturer has anything on this from days gone by?

you need liberal amounts of ammonia and a lot of clean rags as the stickiness must be removed, not just spread. I did mine two months ago and it still looks great. You can’t put anything on the wheel to prevent it as it is outgassing from the vinyl.
