I'd love to see the owners manual / installation guide for this head unit. I've not been able to find a downloadable version. Do any of know of a location for documents?
Regarding the rear camera, the one recommended by Ltemple for $17.99 is a front view camera without distance scale lines by default. To use it as a rear view camera, you "need to cut the green looped wire and the distance scale lines will appear, [as the] camera is a normal image camera by default, cut the white looped wire and the image becomes a mirror image. " I ended up buying a similar one but already set up as rear camera by default ($22.99):

There are two sets of instructions in the box. One is for the install (one page) and one is a seventeen page users manual. I'll try to make a pdf of the users manual, but here is a jpg of the install instructions. It's very basic but it accomplished the job:
Also, for those of you who are ordering, don't forget you'll need an antenna adapter (all GM installs require this). I found them in stock at the local Walmart, but also O'reilly's and Autozone, and Best Buy. Here it is on Amazon:
Ltemple...thanks much for the technical info!! Also, love the idea of mounting the backup camera into the license plate. Like you, I'd prefer to not drill any holes.
On the topic discussed earlier on about lack of volume control. I saw an accessory that appears to be a wireless Steering Wheel Remote that's made for a cupholder. Its an interesting thought, and I'm assuming that I could use that to control the volume. The downside might be that it requires wiring in another module to the back of the head unit.
I actually have that control **** on order, but I couldn't find one in the US so it'll take a few weeks from China. I'll probably gut the thing and use a different **** and mount it somewhere, since there is only one cup holder and it has a lid is too shallow for the device.

If this works I think I'll pull the trigger on this setup.
To the OP. This is a really great write up and find. This unit looks like it could be or maybe it is meant to be mounted on the front side of the dash panel and cover the oem radio cutout.. Do you think it could be mounted this way on the C5.

It could absolutely be mounted in front of the dash. It's actually designed to do so, and it would solve the problem of the visible screen area being too large for the dash opening, and therefore no need to root it. For me, I wanted to find a unit that would fit in the dash as if it was made for it in the factory, and this came closer size-wise than anything else. I like the clean look. It actually reminds me a little of the C4 dash, and that's a good thing. I know a lot of people may not care for it, but I love the c4's dash (84-89) in all its' Knight Rider futuristic flat screen glory. Technology wise, it was a little ahead of its time, but this android unit allows me unlimited creative control on how it looks. I may even make a C4 theme for it. Still, I would probably prefer it even on the outside of the dash to most other units out there. Thanks for the comment.
I really appreciate that you've shared this with us, and with so much detail! Just placed an order for one (through eBay, they accepted my $340 offer. On Aliexpress they raised the price).
My time with Android head units started when I turned the original Nexus 7 (2012) tablet into a head unit, back in 2013. Later switched to Nexus 7 2013 model. Currently my 2001 Audi S4 has an Atoto Android HU. So this Joying unit for my C5Z is right up my alley.
Also ordered the backup camera you linked to; Amazon has a $5 off coupon currently.

It looks like only the top part is needed for these, I've been looking at them. Maybe velcro and find a place on the tunnel to look more in harmony with the interior.

Maybe paint the dial or plasti-dip the ****?
My thinking as well. I'm hoping to be able to dismantle it and place the mechanism below the console (where the magna ride suspension **** would be, but I don't have that option so there's just a blank space there) and attach the **** on top. I successfully did this with a usb control **** only to learn usb control ***** don't interface with android head units well. Long story. Anyway, we'll know in a few weeks.

I'm putting all my order together but it sounds like you're out a bit ahead of me. I look forward to everyone's little twists on this but this thread has been just amazing. Looking forward to a modern system in my C5 without breaking the bank!
