Default Car jack in your trunk?

Hi Members,

I've been pondering which car jack would work best with the snap in URO jack pads? It would need to be stored in the trunk in case of a road side flat.

Been looking at scissor jacks, but the top saddle would probably slip off the jack pads with any appreciable lift. Standard floor jacks would work but size and weight are an issue here in my FRC.

What are you using?

Thanks,

Bruce

Thanks Surfer G,
Had a flat last month. Luckily the nail head was easy to spot, but installing the plug was a PIA with me trying to ream out the hole and installing the plug while trying to get the leverage while on my stomach. Ouch!

Would rather install the plug with the tire off.

BTW I daily drive my Vette to a train yard. Flats are common there. A small jack would come in handy for emergencies.

Had three C5s covering over 17 years and never carried a jack in the cars. Did carry a plug kit and an air compressor. If I couldn't get it fixed with those two items, I had emergency road service on my car insurance.

With the air out of the tire the only thing that will fit under there is a scissor jack maybe. I see a set of run flat tires in your future. I recommend Michelins

I've driven all over the western states in sports cars without a spare tire. Never had a flat while on the road, but I expect that I will one day (I seem to pick up plenty of nails around town, though).

For tire repairs while on road trips...

Plan A: use my cell phone to call AAA. If I am out of cell range or plain out of luck, in my trunk there lives a Road-Ready bag that contains certain necessities for Plan B and Plan C.

Plan B: torque wrench, socket for wheel lugs, two extra wheel lugs, scissor jack, pliers, four hockey pucks, tire repair kit, 12v DC compressor, air pressure gauge, plastic bag to sit / lay on if needed, and hand wipes to tidy up.

Plan C: a can of fix-a-flat.

I used to carry a small 1.5T aluminum floor jack in the center cubby. Fit perfectly in there.

A big *** subwoofer resides there now so no more jack for me

Be aware: you can't safely carry a jack or a spare tire in a C5 coupe unless you fabricate a way to secure them to the car. In an accident, the spare will be the first thing to go through your mind, and the jack will be the last. The cargo panels will not contain a jack or heavy item below them either.

Without a spare, I don't see much point to carrying around a floor jack.
Pump and plug kit for sure! I do have a jack and pump in the 4runner though (full size spare).

Check out Modern Spare, https://modernspare.com/ . They make a complete kit for our cars. I've been considering it for road trips but haven't bought it yet. I agree that you will have to come up with a way to secure it.

Think about what that floor jack would do in an accident. Not a good idea.
Buy a plug kit/inflator, get AAA or go back to run flats. All way better options than having that thing sitting right behind your head

Modern run flats would be my choice if my car was a daily driver. Problem solved. And yes they are much better than the originals that came from the factory

Appreciate your replies. I'll look into purchasing Michelin run-flat tires.

As per mborgen's reply, this modernspare.com scissor jack accessory kit for $39.99 plus shipping looks like what I was originally seeking.

Great information. Thanks again.

bruce03, here's an old link to a jack that you might still be able to find - dealer parts dept, salvage yard, etc. - I can't say for sure. It is a pretty slick design, compact and light, and perfect as the carry-along emergency jack. I can't say how this would work with the jack pads you mention, but perhaps with some modification or change...?
