I'm curious to find out how many people are doing the commute thing in their Z06 vs just weekends/track days? Any words of advice/warning to someone considering purchasing a new 02/03 Z06 for the daily driver thing? I put 53K miles on my last car in about 4 years as a point of reference.
I have put 1600 miles on mine since Oct. 25th. When I sold my 2001 Cp, it had 13,000 miles on it in 16 months and I made several long trips in it. I can't stay out of the Z. I drive it every day it's not raining. :yesnod:
I do about 14000 a year in my 02 Z06. I drive it rain or shine. Got rid of the GY SC's and replaced with Toyo's which solved my slip and slide. I park in a secure parking lot so I have no concern about theft at work. I cover the car during the day with a NOAH cover and I use a front mask. Its still like new. Happy with the mileage (honest 22mpg with traffic congestion). NOt happy with repairs - fuel sender unit, leaky rear end, bad computer. But still lover the car especially with my extended warranty.
I don't daily drive it but I have put over 13,000 miles on mine in 6 months! I'm enjoying every minute of it. The only time it got tiring was after driving it 1000 miles in one day. Kinda felt like I had sea legs when I walked out of the car.
Other than that, I have had 13,000 mostly trouble free miles. Here is a summary of issues:
Defective rear axle boot - changed at 500 miles free of charge
Rattle behind dash - fixed under warranty at 4000 miles
Flat tire that put me out of commission at 11,000 miles - fixed at $470 total cost at dealer.
I have changed the oil twice (1000 and 5000 miles) and have done nothing else to it. The car is a little loud but is otherwise comfortable and a BLAST to drive! I say go for it!
I put on about 12k a year. I try not to drive in rain and especially snow. I try not to drive in rain mainly because I don't like having to clean the car everyday, I hate a dirty car. Snow is just out of the question. I can see that being dangerous unless you have snow tires on or the snow is light and you are driving like a snall. I have gotten caught in the rain and it is not that bad. I keep the RPM's low and take my time. No issues except a dirty Z06. If you want to drive year round in a AWESOME car then the Z06 is for you. Anything else would not be as forgiving. Good Luck
My 02 Z06 is a daily driver, rain or shine. In fact, I rarely drive it on the
weekends. If you get stuck in serious stop-and-go (> 20 minutes), the clutch can
get tiring. Road noise at speed limits effectiveness of the sound system to
help pass the time, but I like the way the car sounds, so that is not much of a
problem. Overall, I am very happy with the car as a daily driver.
The 03 Z is my 4th Vette. I had a 78 for about a month - drove it every day. Next was a 92 - drove that everyday (that it wasn't in the shop) for about 3 years. Then there was my 99 Torch Red FRC. I babied that car big time. It got driven in the rain a hand full of times and only had 26K on the clock when I traded it on my 03 Z a couple of weeks ago. Thinking back on that I wish I had driven that car every freaking day. The Z will be my daily driver. I'll probably rack up 12K - 15K a year. Drove it in the rain today on purpose, just to get over that initial "don't get it dirty" anxiety. Of course I washed it when I got home even though it was still sprinkling a little. :) My thinking is that you can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy the car every chance you get.
It will be one year tomorrow. I have racked up 19,000 miles and I am still grinning big time! Rain or shine, it gets driven. The Dynamat Xtreme under the rear cargo area really helped rid the interior booming and resonance. Made the stereo very usable once done. Tires still look like they will go quite a bit further.
My only mods have been CAGS defeat, Dynamat, and last week Pioneer Nav System. I will probably change shifter to one from Hurst for the next mod. I really miss the slick shifting of my 69's setup. I just haven't warmed up to the rather notchy, rubbery feeling of the stock shifter.
I use mine as a daily driver but have other cars I also drive daily. This definition is far remote from a "show" or "race" car only. The Z06 is civil enough to make a daily drive the least mundane.
