I'm finally getting around to replacing the speakers in my '00 (already replaced the head unit a while ago).
Speaking with crutchfield, they suggest kicker for the twiddlers, and a kicker 8" speaker that supposedly fits stock in the doors.. but it's a real sub.. 500hz is the highest response it has.. it's not an earth shattering sub … but I'm a little nervous getting replacing the stock speakers with just a sub. Anyone do anything like this?
I'm not an expert, but I certainly wouldn't replace the door speakers it with a sub. They do totally different things. MAYBE this would be okay if all you're going for really thumping bass (which I don't care for).
To replace the Sub in the doors, you need to remove all of the Bose components. The Bose sub is not a true sub. It is from what I have read a 1 ohm voice coil. There is a small amp for it mounted behind the 3.5 inch twiddler.
In a cost conscious system I would replace the 3.5 inch twiddlers with a quality speaker with a similar 6.5 (or 5.25 if a vert or FRC) shallow mount speaker. For the rear speakers you do not want anything that has a magnet diameter of greater that 2.5 inches. It just won't clear everything.
Thanks... I'm just considering replacing the 8" bose with an 8" sub, also replacing the twiddler in the door...
Any recommondations on the twiddler? crutchfield is telling me that most 3.5" won't work, because they sit up too high and would get crushed by the grill..
Just another data point for you. This is what I got for my setup and I'm very happy with it; plenty loud, excellent bass, and balanced for my taste. I didn't replace the rear speakers though, so currently the rears are not used at all for me, but I don't miss them since it's a small cabin anyway. So a traditional stereo (2.1) is what my setup is now.

where'd you get that subwoofer enclsoure? that's pretty clean looking, and probably the least expensive one I've seen.
Enclosure, sub and speakers I got on eBay. They were better priced there at the time. Amp and wiring on Amazon. I posted the item description pictures.
By the way, the 6.5" speakers I mentioned cleared perfectly, as well as the 12" sub, but they were both "shallow designs". The one amp I got powers everything; 2 channels for the 6.5" speakers and 2 bridged channels for the sub. Everything was thought out regarding Wattage, Ohms, size, etc. Like I said, PLENTY loud if I crank it up before reaching distortion levels. Loud enough that I don't even hear the engine and I'm cammed with headers and free flowing exhaust.
