Default Spare key need

Hey guys where can I get spare key for my 2001 corvette?
does the key have a chip?

I want to Lowe’s to make some other keys and I asked if he can also make spare key for the vette and he said they can’t.

Is the dealer my only option?

thank you very much

Good news, easy and inexpensive solutions are available for this problem.

the keys have an imbedded resister chip in seven different resistance ranges, set in black plastic , with just a contact line of metal showing. . You need the resistance in the chip on the key to match what your computer is expecting to read to start the car. Beyond getting the correct chip, everything else is just a normal key replacement. .

I measured the resistance on my key, matched it to my resistance range, one of seven, using tables posted here, and went down and bought a new key over the counter at the chevy dealer for $30.

unfortunately, my key was very worn, and the automatic key cutter used at the dealership produced a key with only one functional side, but looked ok.. new blanks were ordered, but all that resulted from multiple attempts, were more one sided only functions on a two sided key.

The closest dealer to me wanted $130 dollars for the same single spare key, I declined that offer. The counter worker said that without a key, the car wouldn't start, visibly shocked I wasn't buying a key. Duh.

You can buy the OEM key blanks , in the correct resistance, on the internet, and have them cut locally with any duplicating machine, hardware store style or better. that is how I am getting my next keys cut, to try and get a copy that works on both sides. I suspect the heavy wear was a condition that automatic key cutting machines can't handle. last time I checked, years ago, a spare resistor blank from the internet was seven bucks.

You can get a key from either the Internet, dealer or a locksmith. As mentioned, you will need to know the pellet resistance on your existing key and will most likely have to prove ownership of the car when getting the key cut.

I wanted a thrid spare key (to hide under car to get in when the keys were locked up in the said car). So i went to my ;ocal Chevrolet Dealership and ordered one. Their price was $75 and that included cutting it as well from a ORIGINAL key. At the time I thought it was a little expenisive. reason for the thought was , my wife's DD is a 2015 Equinox. long short , she lost her keys, so i ordered one off the internet. After Market Key, and I went to a locksmith to have it cut (It's called a switch blade key). Locksmith cut it , and i tried it , it would unlock butm only started with the factory key in my pocket. If the gfactory key was out of the car, it would not start. So ordered another blank, went to the dealership to have them cut it to possible reprogram it , three attempts to program, it wouldnt program.........So 163.00$ later, a new factory key. My advice to anyone stay away from Aftermarket Keys, that have to be programmed.
Just .02 worth

I made a duplicate key without the chip. I carry it with my house keys. It will help if I ever leave my car keys locked inside.

The video shows you how to measure the key resistance so you can order the correct key and have a locksmith cut it.

Ebay is another source for the blank OEM keys, got mine for $7 shipped. Then got it cut for free at my local dealership.

My local locksmith had the right key in stock and copied mine for $23 in ten minutes. Shortly after doing that my girlfriend located the key she misplaced so now I have three.

@C7ZO6 As mentioned above, if your current key works fine turning the lock cylinders, you can easily make duplicates:
  • Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of your key pellet.
  • Check the chart below and find the corresponding VATS No.
  • Buy a blank with the correct VATS for your car (Google will help you )
  • Make a duplicate in the place of your choice

What year is your car? The fob changed as the earlier cars have PKE, and the newer ones don't. You have to make sure you get the right one. The newer ones are cheap and easy to find on eBay. You can easily program them yourself through the DIC.

I got a locksmith to do it. They figured out what key I needed (I think they did this with last 6 vin) came out to me, cut the key in the truck. 90 bucks delivered to me and I tipped the guy 10 bucks for an even hundo.

Plus! I got to know a car guy who told me of a meetup they have once a week about 15 minutes from me. Bonus!
