Default Mystery Bolt

Vehicle is an 02 Base A4 Convertible and while I was changing the plugs I removed the valve cover plastic dress up shields.
Sitting between the manifold and the top edge of the passenger V.C. I found this. It looks like a suspension bolt but the head is 1/2 inch not 13mm
Anyone who has an idea where it came from please chime in
Thanks
Hary

Bell housing bolt? Or maybe the bolt that attaches the ground to the drivers side head?

I’ll have a better idea in a couple days when my son finishes his car and I put it up on the our lift.

It’s metric believe it or not.

I highly doubt its metric. 13 fits very loosely. 1/2 inch was tight

I’ve had my motor down to the short block and my entire drivetrain apart, and I only remember those rounded bolt heads on the bell housing bolts. and every bolt I touched was metric also.

I’ve rebuilt my entire C5. That’s metric 9.8 on the head of the bolt tells the tale. Get better tools.

No they are much longer. 2 different sizes (lengths) each with knurling on the shanks, very unique.

If you have headers check here too. Some types don’t use this mounting location on the bellhousing clearly

Ahh, I have Craftsman sockets and wrenches and are in good shape. The bolt is < 13mm. If that thing is a 13mm sure is sloppy.

It’s a torque tube bolt from either the motor or transmission end.

That is what that missing bolt looks like. It would make sense why it has the wear mark on the shank like that

Thanks CinciZ06

OK, now comes the intriguing question. What was the previous owner doing removing this and are there any other loose bolts? I’m definitely putting this on the lift before I drive it again
Thanks for sharing and saving a potential disaster

That bolt DEFINITELY sucks and even with the rear cradle lowered it takes a series of extensions and swivels.

The head of that bolt has a longer “top hat”.

More like the torque tube to bellhousing bolts not seen thus far.

I’d say it’s the one at 1 o’clock that most neglect to replace as its tough to access. You won’t see it though with the exhaust h-pipe still in the way.

I know because I left that one out. And I got a squeaking sound at idle mostly that I chased forever exhaust related. That missing bolt held the wiring harness in place and that metal started rubbing on the bell housing making a vibrating squeaking noise that finally I tracked down. That was a few weeks of frustration and that missing bolt was it. Installed it and my world was correct again.
