Reason: Forgot to mention
Im going through the same thing right now and been contemplating what to do.
Probably just doing a basic rebuild with new gears, bearings, and seals. Will probably also have the LSD clutches replaced. I might also do C6Z output shafts. I think thats about all I am going to do.

You may not need new gears. This problem has been solved more than one time by resetting the preload. I once paid almost $1,800 to have a new set of gears put in. Guess what? Within 2 weeks, it started whining again. After they reset the preload, it was gone. I soon realized my $1,800 was, too. Because my old gears looked fine. Even the shop had said my old gears looked fine. Still have them under the bench as a reminder; all gear whines are not always the result of worn gears!!!

Well until the case is opened and gears inspected, there is no way to tell. Mine makes noise under neutral throttle or on the gas. Coast is fine. Shop I am planning on using said thats' classic on these diffs as 99% of the time its the drive side of the gears that are worn and cause this.
Problem is, I dont know of any shops that will go to the trouble of resetting gears that may or may not be questionable... Well let me re-phrase, I bet any shop WOULD take your money with the caveat that if and when that doesnt work, you will be paying for gears AND more labor to set them up. Then you have time pulling the diff from the car, re-installing it, maybe pulling it again...
Nah... ill spend the $450 the gear set costs and then if anything happens with that(like yours and they had to go back in and adjust it) the shop can do that under warranty... Not worth the hassle to me to chance it. Just my 2c...
My '99 vert is just the opposite. I hear a whine when i take my foot off the gas. I notice a little whine when up-shifting and tbe clucth is in. I've only had the car a few months and have been hoping itz normal for tbe car. Is tbis a common thing?
