Thanks for all the replies about batteries. Didn't mean to just add another thread to this issue, but new data is released all the time and I appreciate everyone's recent experiences. We all have probably had good and bad experiences with batteries. I certainly have. Last battery for this Corvette was the best available Interstate model, purchased from my favorite Costco, but lasted less than two years. I am going to try the Optima Yellow top this time and see how it goes (but I am keeping the receipt in my file, just in case!).
Wishing everyone a better New Year in 2021, since 2020 really sucked for most everyone!
If you're talking AC/DELCO, I agree. I have had great luck with the Professional series. To each his own, but mine was reasonable-$125.00, IIRC. Back in the early 80s, I owned a 1969 427 Corvette. Bought it for $4,600. Sold for $5,200. I thought I was doing great, driving it for a year, and selling it for $600.00 more than I paid for it!! DOHHHHH!!!!! Anyway, it had the JC Penney lifetime battery (the last battery your car will ever need! Remember those?) rated at 550CCA, which was pretty big forty years ago. That 550CCA battery cranked that old 427 over with absolutely no problem. Nowadays, I have the Professional series 800CCA/110-120minutes reserve capacity. Stealer will give you the exact specs, then buy it wherever you want.......
Go for an AGM with the best warranty you can get. My old K1500 truck lives outside, and has a Walmart Maxx battery. Cheap, and it does the job.The C5 is running on a 12 year old Sears Platinum (aka Odyssey Extreme).
Get to Sam's club and buy their Duracell AGM. It's the best deal for an AGM in 34/78 by far.
I have not had very good luck with AGM batteries from East Penn, who make Duracell and NAPA AGM batteries. My second NAPA battery AGM is less than 2 years old and will not hold a charge, but now out of warranty. Also, been through 4 marine AGMs from them. NO MORE.....
Walmart actually has the best warranty for the lowest price for a basic battery....
I just bought a new group 75 battery for my 2001 a couple weeks ago and heavily considered the Walmart battery. My choices were Costco Interstate or Walmart Everstart, and IIRC the Walmart warranty was either the same or a few months longer. Both were the same price ($89). I decided to go with Costco again as I know for a fact that they will honor the warranty no questions asked. I'm sure Walmart would have been fine, but I came across a couple reviews saying Walmart told them they had to go directly through Everstart for warranty replacements. Doesn't sound right, but didn't want to chance it haha.
Pro tip for those who opt for the Costco Interstate: They come WITHOUT straps now...flabbergasted me when I saw the shelves of batteries with no straps. Since I had a few minutes in line, I used my key to remove the strap from my old battery and swapped it right over. Wasn't the same brand, but most of these batteries are made in the same plant anyway. Not a huge deal, but I didn't want to mess with dropping the battery in the C5 cavity without a handle haha
I’m using a very old optima yellow top. It still works great, although after letting the car sit for a week, then spending about 20 minutes with the key on engine off playing with my Tech 2, it was a little slow to start. I’m not sure what I’ll get to replace it but I’ve seen several newer red tops fail which makes me worry about the optima quality now.
Odyssey AGM. Probably the best AGM battery on the market. Not cheap but a fantastic battery. Can be discharged to 0 and can still be recovered. My vette sat a few weeks and volts were barely registering. Hooked to another good battery for a few hours, voltage came back up and started it and charged back up again. I have it in the car disconnected now and keep a tender on it for the winter.
