I sent mine out for repairs about 3 years ago. I think I got scammed. The guy called me and said it was unrepairable, he said the screen was fried. He gave me a refund and gave me an extra 75.00 to use my old unit as parts. I had to go out and get a junkyard unit. It turned out okay. Junkyard unit had all the colorful LEDS in it. I had a double din installed at Best Buy while I was getting the HVAC, I think Best Buy tapped into a power wire of some sort. If I turn the AC on, radio turns off, AC off and the radio turns back on. That’s my only current flaw.
I did my own, many years ago a member named TStar had a thread about doing them. There is a diagram that I made (its crude, but it's easy to follow). This is what mine looks like now that it is fixed. You really do want to make sure you don't short anything so tape/heat shrink the leds so that you don't get any problems. You should shave the tops of the LEDs down for more even light distribution. I did not do that, but it still looks ok. I've had it like this for a while and have had no problems. To answer the original question, I don't think there should be any problem if the HVAC isn't present while driving. You will just be chilly or too hot, depending on the weather that day.

I'm curious; where did you send the unit for repairs?
I sent it to automotive circuit solutions in Missouri. They were responsive and friendly on the phone. Repaired and sent it back same day it arrived there.
