It is my understanding that the C6 shift boot attaches with a set screw right below the ****.
The C6 **** fits with a set screw to the C6 shifter. The boot clips into the ****. The actual boot is shaped differently than the C5. Some people have had luck stretching the C6 boot to fit the C5 trim retainer ring.
For awhile someone made a metal ring that allowed for the C6 boot to work with the C5 console.
In my application I simply retained the C6 boot retainer and fit it under the C5 console. It’s not perfect but looks good for my application. Some day I might change it for the metal retainer ring
but not right now.
Edit
That is a C6 Carbon Edition suede boot / **** combo.

I have the metal ring you mentioned and a boot retainer sold by Raceseng that keeps the ring snug at the ****. I’m thinking of swapping my all-red boot for a C6 black one with red stitching, but it sounds like I’d be better off buying a boot made for the C5 instead. Not interested in changing my shift **** though.

If black / red stitch was your goal, absolutely buying one pre-made for the C5 would be what I'd do as well.

Ok, I hadn’t seen this while I was writing you on PM.
I added a ring to my Redline boot and C6 shift ****. Just had to tell them to leave the small end of the boot open (normally they tuck the top end inside and sew around it). The metal ring slides inside the boot and is held on by a stiff rubber o-ring over the boot. THEN the top gets tucked inside.

That looks great! Where did you get the ring?
I searched for a long time and could not find just the ring by itself. I ended up buying a cheap C6 boot off eBay for like $20 and it came with a ring.
