It is referred to as a BSM or Body Side Molding. It is an optional feature. Some people really like them, and others hate them. They are easily removed if you don't like them. They are mostly cosmetic, but there is evidence that they slightly improve the aerodynamic properties of the car.

Do not know about the aerodynamic properties of the BSM, but I do know they provide some protection for inconsiderate people/accidental doors of other cars striking yours. A person open the door of their car, the wind caught it and it slammed into my passenger's side. The BSM was just barely nicked (easily touched up) but I believe there would have been much more damage if the BSM was not there to absorbed the blow.

It was an option that could be ordered on new C5s. It probably was intended for protection or just cosmetic detail. But, now that you mention it....it does have a Stingray feel to it. Maybe I will tell people my C5 is a Stingray edition....

Seems like the BSMs were/are a love it or leave it type of option. I personally like the car either way.

I elected it on my 2000 build sheet. I had removed them by 03. My next two C5s have also began life with BSMs, and they have found or will find their way to the trash. Once I saw the body lines up close when detailing without them I knew they had never belonged.

I do also feel that they date the car, giving it a very 80s feel like a third gen camaro with louvers.

Agreed. My car has them. Once in a while, when I see a really nice looking C5 without them, I think about taking them off mine just for fun, but decide against it, since I don't want to deal with possible paint mismatch underneath.

I expect to deliver a report on the positive aerodynamic effects of the body side moldings next time my car reaches 450 mph.

LOL.

like the "coke bottle" area rule shape of the Century Series Fighters. Reduced drag when trans & supersonic.

Still haven't found anything on original intent of the BSMs....
But this similarity is too coincidental....
