As feeder82 said, it is generally easier to find tires in the 18/19 sizes over the 17/18 sizes and as long as you maintain the tire height difference (rear tire approximately 1" taller than the front), this ensures the traction control and ABS continue to work properly. If your son put on the standard (base) C6 tire sizes of 245/40-18 and 285/35-19 you will maintain the stagger. (This is assuming 18x8.5-9.0 front and 19x9.5-10.5" rear wheel sizes. If he went above those wheel widths you may need to go with a larger tire).
Some have mentioned using the same size tires front and rear, or otherwise not keeping the standard C5 tire stagger without affecting the TC/ABS but I don't know that there is a guarantee that changing the stagger will not affect these systems.

It works just fine as long as the front diameter isn't greater than the rear, FYI.
