Default "code named C-5" History Question

– October 28, 1996 – AutoWeek and Automotive News showed the first public pictures of an undisguised next generation Corvette. They also, as far as I have been able to determine, introduced to the public for the very first time, the Official Corvette Corporate Generation Designation system, which Automotive News called "C-5". At the time, it stirred a major debate among Corvette fans about why was the 1997 Corvette the Fifth Generation. The "Solid Axle", "Mid-Year", "Sharks" designations were the informal generation designations used early on.

My question is - was there any published evidence available to the general public prior to October 28, 1996 that identified the C1 (Corvette One), C2 (Corvette Two), etc, designation system used by GM?

I ordered my car in September of 1997 and took delivery of it on January 5 1998. I looked for as much information on these cars as i could find. If I'm not mistaken, i read that the C5 designation stood for the platform that the new corvette sat on. As far as i can remember i don't recall a corvette referred to with that C1 C2 C3 C4 designation. Im sure if I'm wrong I will hear about it.
