Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to opt for a PowerMaster XS Torque starter? There is nothing wrong with oem, but after some issues last year with the one on my daily I thought to go for the free-clockable unit here and then add heat shielding for my LS2 build.
Personally, it seems like an unnecessary expense. As long as you heat shield it, the OEM unit should be fine. As long as the car starts, it's not like this really gains you anything. However, if you're really worried about it, it's your car, and your money. What issues did you have with the starter on your daily? Did it get toasted by headers?
The first one cooked. In a rare example, I paid people twice last year to work on my car when I was flat out with work. No furlough or time off for the front line. In both cases they were people I would typically trust, but in both cases they messed up minor things and with the starter the wires on the new setup cooked. That "new" starter being the one off the donor LS6 out of the Z. So I ended up needing a new one for the Z06 and I have definitely been spendy where I don't need to be on this car. It is one I intend to keep for a long time so I'm being needlessly free with purchases.
