Default Replacement key

I have a 98 convertible that needs another key, I only have one. I contacted the local chevy dealer and they said the codes were no longer available. Is there a vendor that could provide another key? I hope they could make one by using the VIN # as I am hesitant to send the only key thru the mail. Thanks for your response.

Measure the resistance on the pellet on your key and order the blank you need

First, you need to measure the VATS on your current key.
How to read your VATS Pellet Number! - McGuire Lock

Then Order the Key from one of the Vendors with the proper VAT.

Almost any locksmith has the right blank in stock. They reproduced my key in five minutes for $23.

This is the fastest, cheapest option. You can measure and order as suggested, but then you'll still have to get the blank cut to match. A locksmith can do all of it in one stop, and will likely make you a better quality copy than you can get at Lowes or Home Depot.

I went to Ace Hardware, had a key cut for $2.50. Works fine, same machine as the high priced locksmith.
You can get the same coded VATS key blank on ebay for $10-12. Uncoded door key is $6-7.

It's a good idea to always carry an uncoded door key in case you lock yourself out. You know this is going to happen when you're miles from home.

Agree, but also hide a coded key in the car should you also face Murphy's law, and loose your keys. Experience is a great teacher.

Default VATS Key Reference Table

I decided to combine the information presented in the two table sources into one Excel spreadsheet for those who want both the resistance and the GM VATS Letter Codes.
I hope that this is helpful for others.
