Off Base

Is a convertible better than or worse than a Coupe? I don't know. Then the FRC came out and was supposed to be a dumbed down Corvette but in a good way. Then the Z came out and everything else became substandard and coupes = Base.
Just a topic of thought that doesn't mean anything, and I'm far from a diehard corvette guy or purist.
As far as 5th Gen cars go... you only have 4 flavors. Coupe, Vert, FRC, and Z. As in all of the modern Generations the Coupe was released first, with the 'Vert and (FRC) Z hitting the production line later in the model year OR following year. Even a low optioned car is still just a Coupe (or Targa?) I agree with Mr. Black... calling your Coupe a "base" model seems like you're claiming you own a "lesser than" the other C5's that followed on. If any could even be considered a "base" car it would have been the original concept of the FRC.. after 99 they started optioning it up until it evolved into the Z.... the "base" moniker just never made sense to me....
This was the very first production carbon fiber Tigershark hood of 10. I waited over a year for them to produce it and almost never came out.
Simply beautiful...at first glance it looked like an MCM S/C CF hood...i mean really...it looks great...
Here's a comparison shot to show you what i mean...
I did Satin Black roof & halo instead of the traditional gloss, wanted something to match the satin trim on the targa & the windshield frame. doesn't show the best in this late evening overcast photo. I have a few more vinyl ideas in my plans, and I like that it's easily removed if it doesn't give me the look I want.
Here's my '01 light-pewter Vert, somewhat outside of its normal habitat.
The first two were on the National Corvette Museum's Motorsports Park track. I took the "touring" experience, four laps following one of the Park's drivers around the 3.15-mile full loop -- about ten minutes or so of white-knuckle excitement. The last is by 129Killboy, on the Tail of the Dragon -- 311 tight turns in 11 miles.
No disrespect to the convertible guys, but a convertible is not a base, it’s a convertible. There are 3.5 distinct lines, Z06, convertible, coupe. I counted the hardtop as 1/2 as it was only available 1 year and technically, that was intended as the “base” car according to Chevrolet. I’m not sure when all the coupes started being referred to as base, but I believe there was a base coupe and the Z51 coupe package, but since there is no outside visual difference between the two, this should have been a coupe thread. There is/was a convertible thread, and I agree, both should be stickies like the Z06 thread.

To me the “base” model is what all other versions are “based” on. That would be the coupe, hard or targa top.
