Default Stumbling into the c5 area...

since I'm now one of you.
I've always hung out in the C4 side, since I've mainly dealt with them. Been working on my daughter a C3 too, but I managed to get a new ride for Daddy.
Traded a Harley Davidson edition supercharged f150 for a 98 base auto coupe.
It has a few issues...I've already ordered the lmc5 module, and it's probably going to need a battery and some other things. But, it is beautiful and just what I need.
Got it running and drove it for the first time tonight.
After the lt4 car, I really didn't expect it to move out as well as it does.. but it surprised me. I can see mods in the future , but for now this will scratch the vette itch while I finish my stock AD truck restore...then I'll throw money at the C5. My 15 year old is trying to take it away from me already. Guess I'm gonna have to get on her C3 so I can keep her away from my ride
Obligatory Pic of the new to me moneypit..

Looks like you made a great deal. Nice ride! Sounds like you've got a good family situation also. Money pit? Well, maybe but you gotta spend that $$$ on something.

Congrats on the new to you Corvette. I also have the '98 version and I can't really see myself without it, ever. Enjoy.....and I agree with getting the C3 going too. Love those body styles as well.

Nice looking C5 you found - I like the chrome wagon wheels. Best of luck with the car.

Thanks, all. I drove it around 100 miles today. Determined the starter is headed out, so I stopped and got one today- gonna try to put it on this weekend. Went ahead and bought a new battery with the most cranking amps I could find for it. And I made the mistake of stopping by a local shop that loves LS corvettes and seems to specialize in LS cars in general. Last time I was by, they were working on a C6ZR1 for a Texas mile event...I stopped to see about a tune, and maybe future knowledge for a cam. Before I left, they were offering me a set of headers at a discount, a possible set of 3.42 gears for the rear, a tune, and discussing the whole cam thing.
I had to bail. Quickly. I refuse to be sucked into mod-land before it's even tagged, and I HAVE to finish the body work on my beloved '52 Pickup Restoration before I jump headfirst into the C5.
The stereo and seat covers currently in my Crutchfield and Ebay baskets should be disregarded. They're repairs not upgrades. Yeah, Mama didn't buy that either.

What head unit did you buy from Crutchfield and what brand seat covers from EBay?

Get a Delco battery from the dealership. IMO they are just the best. I've had them all.

The seat covers will be Iggee's - I've had a couple of sets on the C4s and am pleased with them. They'll look decent until I bite the bullet and have the seats completely rebuilt. The head unit- I'm going back and forth. Haven't decided yet. It'll be on the economical end of the pricelist, for sure. I've been involved in a remodeling project/ shop build which has me watching dimes pretty close right now.

Congratulations, and welcom to the C5 Crew! (Or maybe, the C5 Legion!)

I'm reasonably new to the Corvette Cult myself; I bought my Pewter Bullet '01 C5 convertible in January. It had a mere 35,000 miles on the odo, and I have been busy correcting that deficiency with some SERIOUS road-trips in the last six months; I'm up to 47K and I may get to 60K by Christmas.

Mods? That depends on your tastes, and your driving experience. If you're used to high-performance cars, you can do a lot to boost the "base model" LS1, and you can SPEND a lot getting there! OTOH, my previous cars were utilitarian, up to and including my 2010 Pious Prius (still my weekday driver) -- and the base LS1 has enough power to satisfy my Walter Mitty dreams, and to get me in a world of trouble if I gun it in the wrong neighborhood. (A former owner added a performance exhaust. I say it has two sound-systems, one by Bose, the other by Borla.)

The Pewter Bullet is my first Corvette, and it may be my last -- I want to drive it, and enjoy it, and show it off, until I'm too old and demented to drive any more.

Got the starter swapped last night. Went ahead and ordered the iggees, knowing that in a year or so we will be replacing them with actual reupholstering. The leather on the factory seats were literally missing for the most part. As clean as the car is outside, the seats looked like they'd been left outside. Carpet and everything is clean though.
I'm still flipping back and forth on the headunit. The factory radios volume won't adjust. If it did, I'd just keep it for now. Eventually I want a double din android auto capable head unit, but the 500 ish bones from Crutchfield ain't happening right now. Thinking about just ordering the interface and buying a cheap Wally world special to do me for a few months. I'm in the middle of a shop build and am waiting on the company I've ordered it from to get off of their rear and get it delivered...so I can see if I have any money left for mods. 😆

Why not just buy a stock head unit from someone to hold you over until you can afford a double din unit. You could probably pick one up on the cheap and include it if you ever sold the car, if someone wanted to put it back to stock.

Good idea...one I may consider. But right now I'm not too concerned about tunes. I drove the car around 70 miles last night running some errands. I pulled up on the way home at a local gas station. Filled it up and got a drink and thought to myself as I walked out " That car doesn't look 23 years old. It's hot!"
I got in and it proved its age. Ignition switch locked up and there was no budging it. Apparently the bypass has been done because I could turn the wheels. I managed to get the switch out and when I did, tiny pins went everywhere. Never saw anything like it.. A nice ride in a rollback later, the Problem Child is back at my place and I've got $200 worth of Ignition switch and lock cylinder on order.
At least the tow truck driver complimented me on the car, saying it looked alot newer than its age.

Get yourself a nice cat back setup and you’ll never need to replace your radio. My X-pipe and Corsa’s are for my listening enjoyment.

^^ This is a fair statement. I’m ready for an Apple Car Play head unit, but find the stock radio is off most of the time, listening to my Borla S type through a Corsa X-pipe. Being a convertible, that sound is like an orchestra that never stops playing 😎

Right now- and I'm fortunate to live in a state without severe emission controls- my music is a straight piped wonder. Yes, a previous owner removed the mufflers, catalytic converters, everything. I have two straight pipes with Borla tips. I will say that it doesn't drone as much as I would have thought and doesn't sound too bad.
Soon enough it will get a tune, some longtubes, and some other goodies.
