Default Camshaft - hp

What's a good replacement cam to increase hp on a 2004 C5 - also i assume one would work for a Base and a Z06?

It all depends on what you're looking for. Cams go anywhere from mild to wild. The thing to keep in mind with a cam is that the bigger and more aggressive the cam is, the less drivable on the street the car becomes. A mild cam can give you a moderate HP bump without making the car too hard to deal with. A very aggressive cam can give you big HP, but will make the car awful to drive on the street. What are your goals? How are you primarily using the car? If this is a track only car, a big cam is a good option. If it is a weekend cruiser, I would stay with something pretty mild. The cam will also change the way the car sounds. I don't know if you care about that or not. Many people who do cam swaps will also upgrade their cylinder heads and intake as well. You will see people refer to H/C/I cars. This is heads/cam/intake. Also keep in mind that you'll need to get a tune if you're going to do a cam swap. You also have another thread asking about forced induction. If you are interested in forced induction, that can also make a HUGE difference in the cam that you chose. Also keep in mind that forced induction alone will get you some pretty good gains without the drivability issues that you get with upgraded cams. You'll really need to tell us more about your goals before we can give you more detailed advice on a cam. Also, you assume correctly that you can do a cam swap on both a base and Z06 model. Actually the stock cam is the biggest difference between the two motors.

Comp has a mild street cam that has a 112° LSA, 222° duration@.050" lift intake, 224° duration@.050 lift exhaust, with around .560"/.570" lift. It all depends on what you want.

One thing you should do if you change cams is install the LS6/Z06 intake manifold. It's not cheap, but used ones can be found for $300/$400 online......

BTR cams are quite good. Stage 2 or 3 depending on your other mods.. Be careful what cam you choose if everything is stock....bigger is not always better.

There is good advice here, and you might benefit from calling the cam companies and picking their brains. Ask for an engineer to speak with. These guys love to talk about their stuff and will help you find the right parts.

Comp cams is the 800 pound gorilla. If there is front line technology, they have it.

BTR Brian Tooley Racing has popular cams. They are a small company, and you could probably talk to Brian yourself.

TSP Texas Speed Products has a line of cams that are also popular. They keep a lot of stock on hand, and are known for their customer service.

Also, don’t overlook GM Performance Parts. They got us here, right? Scoggin-Dickey is a GMPP distributor, and they have decades of practical and professional experience in helping customers build performance with reliable and compatible components. SD is also one of the oldest Chevy dealers going back to the thirties. Nice folks and lot of inventory. BTW, if you decide to use GM parts you’ll find it’s often less expensive too.

Dead thread since the guy hasn’t been back in 2 months and we don’t even know what transmission he has.

lame request with a dead follow up.

thread should be deleted from time. Not worth the clutter for anyone in the future looking back.
