Default Transmission flush

Have a 2000 with automatic trans. It has 91000 on it. Have had car for 5 years. I have no history on the car. Getting trans filter and fluid change. Dealer is suggesting a trans flush. Trans works great except hard shift between 1 and 2. I have heard not to get a flush!!!!!!!!!!!! Any suggestions. Thanks, Rich

I would just change the filter and fluid in the pan. If there are issues with the trans a flush will exacerbate them. If there are not and the fluid looks great, the basic service will be fine and you could always do just a fluid service again. With no history, a basic service will be the best first step.

The reason that trans flushes have a bad rap is that they can clean out gunk that is otherwise sealing leaks. If you're worried about it, fluid and filter will be fine.

Ditto. Just change the filter and fluid like others have said above. But also, run far, far away from that dealership.
Flushes cause damage, dealership is suggesting it so they can make more money off of you with a trans replacement (or rebuild since I assume you can't get these transmissions anymore).

I would try to find an independent mechanic that specializes in Vettes in your area, you could ask in the regional forums...it's how I found mine.

Transmission flushes DO NOT cause damage. They can however, reveal damage that already exists (by washing away contaminants that have plugged already existing leaks). Also, OEM transmissions are certainly still available for the C5. Most dealerships actually don't rebuild transmissions, but will do a swap. With that said, I do agree that you are generally going to be better off at a quality independent shop that you would be at a dealership.

Semantics, sure, technically it doesn't damage anything but it will it make minor issues turn into larger, more debilitating ones necessitating a complete tear down.
Most new vehicles have a 'no touchie' 'lifetime' fluid in their transmissions and people that have taken their cars to shady shops and got the 'you should do a flush' usually come back to the dealer with a slipping trans. Yes, dealerships do not rebuild transmissions, they will sublet, especially on older cars where new transmissions are NLA or they will just turn the poor customer away and claim it wasn't there fault (if they were the ones that suggested it)
