Default Exhaust Differnce

Guys, is there much difference in the "loudness" of a ZO6 titanium exhaust compared to a base exhaust? I'm looking to buy one for my 01 M6 base, the entire car is 100% stock..... I'm just looking for a bit more "sound" while not being very loud. Is it worth the investment? Thanks !!

Very opinionated question, but, No, I don’t think it’s worth it. Leave the stock exhaust on it, add headers, now that would be worth it. Not sure how loud it will be, if you just put the hi flow cats on there, leave the stock mufflers.

more opinions please.

I’d say it’s worth the investment. For one, it is considerably lighter. It’s been a while since I had my OEM Ti’s, but I did think they sounded better than the standard exhaust, and you can have the bypass mod done if you want them louder. (If you can find someone that can weld titanium)
Also, I’ve had several people in the performance industry tell me they breath pretty much as well as any aftermarket axleback available.

Typically they sell in the C5 for sale threads in the $400-$600 range, which is much less than most aftermarket axlebacks.

To me I could tell the difference 100% over the standard exhaust. I can here the car better inside and my dad says it sounds much better as well. Keep in mind this is a stock exhaust for the Z so it wont be as loud as going aftermarket. But in my opinion, if you want a little more noise, but not aftermarket, better looking tips, this is a good choice.

Do muffler bypass mod on your stock exhaust, I wouldn't splash on the titanium exhaust

Yes I'm going off a local corvette shop also telling me they breath much better than what I have now and are a bit lighter. I don't want extremely loud or Id go ATAK.... Just to hear it a bit more and a little louder from the outside. I can get one from a forum member for a reasonable to me price so I figure why not give it a shot....But I wanted some real world user opinions...

I don’t think you can go wrong. If you don’t get the sound you’re looking for, there is always someone looking for C5Z OEM Ti’s in the for sale threads too. They are a very popular upgrade.

The titanium exhaust weighs about the same as a potato chip. They are very cool and sound great when you stab the gas. If you want an OEM cat back, these are the bomb. Plus, they will become more desirable and the years pass. I have an aftermarket cat back, and am also jonesing for these, so go for it!

That was the first model I did on mine. Stock exhaust was pretty quiet, the titanium sounds much better to me. This year I added headers and catted x pipe and it really woke it up. It still sounds reasonable when cruising but sounds awesome at wot.

The Ti exhaust will have a deeper exhaust note, but if you expect a big difference, an aftermarket exhaust will be a better choice. Of course the Ti exhaust will be a lot lighter than the stock base exhaust.

VJ... not wanting a big difference... just a bit deeper and louder.... being as I plan to keep the car mostly stock other than cat-back and intake. Its unmolested at this point and I want to keep that way as much as possible... Thanks!!

I was very happy with this mod. As others have said, the exhaust weighs about half what the stock exhaust does. It also matches the performance of just about any aftermarket exhaust. The tips look better than stock as well. As for the sound, it has SLIGHTLY more rumble at idle. There's virtually no difference at cruising speeds. However, at WOT the difference is night and day. It was perfect for what I wanted.

I am getting ready to pull the stock titanium exhaust off of my 2002 Z06. I am just waiting for my exhaust that is back ordered. I would happily sell you my exhaust for $350 plus shipping.

thanks brother but I had already made a deal with another forum member… I put it on today… it’s what I was looking for… sound like the OEM base at idle.. maybe a little deeper… but defiantly louder/more aggressive when you stand on it!

Glad that worked out! I also am trying to keep it stock, yet make improvements within that area. Another stock item that makes a huge difference is lower rear gears. Retains daily driver utility, doesn’t alter the engine, but way quicker and fun to drive.

The titanium exhaust upgrade is an economical exhaust mod to an LS1 Coupe or Convertible for a quality great fitting part that will offer better looking tips and a significant weight savings with a modest increase in sound and no resonance. I thought that they sounded good on my '02 Z06 but eventually wanted a deeper tone and larger tips.

You might think that I am a minority mindset when it comes to exhaust note. In that- I prefer my vehicle to be absolutely quiet and stealth. I go so far as to add additional mufflers and turbocharge to make it as silent as possible.

This is for multiple reasons...
1. Do not disturb people in general
2. No Headache driving the car long distances
3. Its about being a gentleman and to not show off "Look at meee ...vroom!"
4. Experienced people can tell how powerful an engine is by how it sounds and especially anything naturally aspirated is instantly labelled as doesn't deserve to be heard
5. If a car is actually fast it is far more impressive when it is silent , it defines the owner as somebody that knows how to make the power and understands how to setup a car properly while maintaining a stock appearance or sound
6. Keeps people guessing about how far down your throttle is. You can make the car seem like it's "barely trying" and accelerate very quickly with no noise to command respect in traffic.
7. The ideal diagnostic situation for an engine is a completely silenced engine, this allows you to listen to the engine internals and diagnose it more easily

Now,
I understand the need occasionally for some sound. Listening to an engine exhaust note may also yield useful diagnostic information and even help you tune the vehicle more easily. So there is some value to 'hearing' the exhaust note.

thus, I always always always run a cut-out exhaust system in additional to the main, silent exhaust system. A cutout is a simple, $30~ device that requires occasional maintenance but it will allow you to run a fully stock and silent system in parallel to as noisy a system as you can possibly stand the noise of which is determined by the press of a wireless remote.

I've had the Ti exhaust on my '99 convertible for several years now. The stock exhaust was black-painted and rather smallish oval shaped. The Ti exhaust looks much better, is very lightweight, and does have a slightly better/louder sound. It's a great way to upgrade from the stock exhaust but still stay OEM . . . and you can get it for a lot less than setups from Borla, Corsa, BB, Magnaflow, etc.

I actually have two sets of the Ti exhaust. The first one I got really cheap from a local guy because the right one "had a little bit of a rattle." It did have something rattling around in there - a chunk out of the cats? - but was not terribly noticeable, except at about 1400 (or 1500?) rpms when there would be a buzzing. I replaced it with another that I got from West Coast Corvettes for pretty much the going price. The old one is on a top shelf in my garage - I hope one day I will have a Eureka moment and figure out how to get that chunk out of it and make it good again.

Heres a video example of the cutout on a ~600rwhp daily gasoline 4l80e car

Here is the same system but before the cam swap, it shows cutout action open and closing in the first minute of video

The necessity of turbocharging is two fold. It both quiets down the exhaust, gives it a unique tone- and allows the owner to dial any power amount they wish from the glovebox.
