I believe it also helps keep the hood cooler from engine heat - over years of keeping the paint cooler it may extend its life. Also, is deadens sound from the engine a bit. I would leave it on unless yours is in nasty shape. You can still get a new one. Just my 2 cents!
My liner was looking a bit tacky so I contacted my local dealership. Sure enough he could get one. Said it would need to be prepaid and there would be no returns. When I bought a liner for my C3 it came in a small box and folded. When installed you could see all the creases. I asked the parts guy if this was the case with the C5 liner or if it was torn etc. could I return it then? He replied In a very stern voice "I said no returns!" Customer service at it's finest.

There are some good dealerships out there but is really is like some of them do not want your business... There are ways of saying no without being an ars.
The underside of my hood (under the hood liner) did not look good. As long as it isn't torn, you can refresh your OEM liner by spraying it with some black Krylon grill paint.
