I am preparing for the new year and a FLP header install and was wondering if I should go ahead and order me a set of Kool Soxs type spark plug boot insulators. Are these neede with the FLPs on a 2002 z06 install ??
You are going to hear people tell you that they got away without using them (i.e. by depending on the stock metal sleeves or buy routing the wires away from the headers.
The reality is, you got headers so your car can make more power. Why would you risk not getting spark to one or more cylinders - think of the power loss.
The answer to your question - YES, you will be glad you got them. Get some anti-seize and loctite also.
I have the stock wires, and the boot outside the metal heatshield comes very close to the header tubes in places...in fact one of them is actually touching the tube. (see pic).
I have about 2k mi on since the FLP's were installed, they don't seem to be burning or deteriorating yet, but I've been keeping an eye on them. I've read of others having them eventually arc out and misfire due to this, and I plan on ordering new wires and heat sox myself soon, you may as well do it at the same time the headers go in.
Re: FLP install - Kool soxs needed ?? (Y2Kvert4me)
I have TPIS LT's and ran into the same problem with the last plug on drivers side. I was using Magncor's with Cool Socks (1200 degree) - Guess what- Cool Socks or not the wire burnt! The Cool Sock burnt also and hardened in the contact area to the header. Bottom line- the wires or socks really can't make direct contact with the exhaust. The socks are for situations were you are close and they will protect. In Y2Kvert4me's picture his wire is making direct contact and I'd say a cool sock isn't going to prevent a burnt wire.
I ended up taking the Magenecor's and Cool Socks off and I am running factories with the metal heat shields. No contact on any of the header tubes.
I think you can get away without using the Kool Socks if you're careful about making sure that none of the wires touch. I ended up getting the Kool Socks because $39.95 is a CHEAP price to pay for the piece of mind of knowing I won't burn any wires out.
Of course you still do need to be careful that the wires/socks do not directly touch the header...
