I am in the market to buy a c5 or c6. Test drove a 1998 convertible with 81k miles and virtually all stock and in vgc. However, I could not get the DIC to bring up the diagnostic menu to show any codes. I have been test driving other cars, 02.03.and 04s and had no issues getting the code menu up. Also, I tried to get competitive drive mode up by pushing the TC button for 5 seconds, but it would only turn on or off. The car is an automatic and has the f55 suspension.
In the trunk, there is a Hypertech tuner in the box. I assume that the car has some tune on it, probably from the early 2000s. Could that be the issue.
The 98's had the F45 system not the F55 system. In 98 the active handling was an option. It's option RPO JL4 and you can find it on the glovebox door.RPO.
1. I just assumed all cars had the same TC handling system. Sure enough no code on the door jam for it. Also realized that it did not have a hud.
2. I got the diagnostic menu up and it had a lot of code. I went back with my wife to drive it and make a deal. We both drove it. I cleared all codes before she she and TC threw a code. I cleared it and went for a drive and it came up again. The ABS did work fine, but we both thought the tc was not working like other vettes we have driven. Decided to pass on the car due to the TC error problem and cost of the .ebcm.
Good luck with your search. As mentioned the F55 was only available on '03-'04 cars. Competitive drive mode was also not a thing on the early cars. The HUD is part of the preferred option package, but was also not available on the early cars. If you care about these features, and are concerned with the EBCM issue, you'll want to limit your search to 2001 and newer cars. I suggest reading all of the sticky posts at the top of this page as well. Also a tip when looking at the codes if it has an H next to it is is a history code, and is not a current issue. If it has a C it is a current problem, and HC is both. Hope this info helps.
I bought a 2004 last night. Same dark red as the 98, but black convertible and interior. Has higher mileage, but seems clean. Thanks for the inputs and response.
