Here is a simple way - go to your local Chevy dealer and ask them to run a vehicle history report. The build date is listed on there. I had a forum supporting dealer run the report on the ‘03 I had and included with the report was a listing of all warranty and dealer performed repair work that had been done to the car.

Not to state the obvious but you can tell by the door placard by month year.

I never felt the need to narrow it down to the day. Maybe I'm just weird that way.

Check the link below, it has your C5 build date as August 20th 1997

I found this site. You can obtain service history by entering your VIN. You do have to register to get the information. I found that my 1998 never had the column lock recall done and it's listed as "incomplete". Not sure how many years you have to get recalls done for free...

That would make it a 1998 not a 1997 which is what the OP quoted.

Mike
You are confusing the date built with the model year. Dec 23 is when the last C5 was built in 1997 - but it was a '98 model. The 1998's had been in production since July 18, 1997 and were produced until June 16, 1998 when the factory switched over to the '99 model. C5 model year switchovers are basically mid-year events.

I will stand with my recommendation in post #6.

I agree that model year change overs were mid year events, usually during July plant shutdown. But the 97 model year was a very short production run, with around 9500 total units made. Switch over to 98 production was late Dec97, early January 98

My Black '98 Base Coupe was born on the same date, a Wednesday. According to automotive superstition a car built midweek has a better chance of being reliable.

Not so. 1997 model year production started early in 1997 and was over by July '97, when 1998 model year production started July 18. I ordered my C5 in June of that year and the order was for a 1998 C5 Coupe - which is exactly what the title and the original Monroney sticker shows. A VIN lookup shows it being built on July 23 - a few days into the '98 production run.
