Yup, that's what the lower gear selectors are for on an automatic. My SUV is an automatic, but has a manual mode that you can switch to if you want to control when it it shifts (sort of like the C8).

I have about 2,000 road course miles on my A4. Yes I have a tranny cooler to keep temps down. Also use manual mode when on a road course. Only use 2nd and 3rd, I have the 3.15 gear. Never been on a strait long enough to hit overdrive. As far as driving around town, all you need to do is leave it in Drive. If you want to play a little bit, go ahead and manually shift it. You won’t hurt it. Also if you ever do an auto cross event, you can probably just leave the shifter in first. I’ve done about a dozen of those, leave the shifter in first and have fun. Honestly, 70,000 plus miles on mine and the tranny still shifts like the day it was new. She takes a beating and just keeps going.
