Under hood lighting
What tells the under hood lights to come on when you lift the hood? Yes, I know where the light is and the connectors, but I want to know what makes it turn on and where?

Not to hijack the thread. Has anyone replaced the underhood light bulb? My googling hasn't given me any good results.

That is what I was doing. I put in two super bright LED's. It made all the difference in the world.

There are plug and play LED options for the stock underhood light. I actually deleted my underhood light to make room for my catch can.

Whoa I wasn't expecting that LED mod. I need to replace the underhood light and the visor bulbs.

Here's another option utilizing a small led panel.

This a slightly more powerful version, although there have been reports of excessive heat.

I'm not sure it's really a "mercury" switch, I think those were phased out years earlier due to toxicity concerns, but it is an angle-sensitive switch. I've taken the one apart in my 2002 Silverado and there's actually a metal rocker that causes a sliding contact to move when the angle of the hood is past a certain point. I assume the C5 mechanism is similar.
