Default Jacking point for cam swap?

Good morning everyone, getting ready to start my cam swap this week on my c5z. I’m just curious where to put the front jack stands. I know where they are supposed to go, but when doing the cam i know the steering rack has to come out and if I put the jack stand on the front cross member won’t that effect me from lowering it to get the rack out?

Honestly. you should use a lift or a set of quick jacks that will allow you to lift the car using jacking pucks.

I have jacked a c5 from the front and placed the Jack stands at the jacking points on the side of the car with jacking pucks. Removed front wheels and got after it.

That's actually not a bad idea.

Put them where the pucks go. Easy peasy.

Also the steering rack doesn't come out the bottom. It is lifted up out of it's mounting ears on the cradle and then slid out the side.

Crud...I forgot to take out my jacking pucks when I went for a ride yesterday. Maybe I still have 1 or 2.

You also have to drop the front cradle about 1/2" on its studs to get the rack out, so you can't support the car on the cradle anyway.

Exactly why I bought the ones that screw/clamp to the chassis semi permanently. Because I know I'd be that guy.

Hopefully you didn't lose one or send one into another car. :o

I didn't have to do that at all but I also have an early car with the EBCM in the back.

I also chock the back wheels. Once on Jack stand and off the Jack give it a wiggle to make sure it’s secured.

I also didn’t have to lower the cradle to get the rack out on my ‘03 Z. It took a little bit of finagling, but it did come out.

If you have not already replaced the original balancer, this would be a convenient opportunity to do so.

After you remove the front wheels, you can slide them under the sides of the car as a back up safety measure.

If you are pulling the rack all the way out, you might want to make sure you have some space on the driver side of the car. Oh, you’re going to want an 18mm line wrench handy for the power steering lines.

It's interesting how we all have our own methods of working on things! I always take my rack out the passengers side!!! To each their own. Whatever works best for each of us, I guess....
