FYI. I wanted a spare key to get into the C5 only, no chip. I locked my keys in the car and had to have wife come with the spare. Tried Home Depot and Loews but they did not have the blank. Went to the Chevy dealer and had one made for $15.00. Small price to pay to avoid the discussion about why I left the keys in the car. Will either carry in my wallet or locate somewhere on vehicle
If I remember correctly, if you lock the car with the fob and unlock it with a key the alarm goes off.
IIRC, if you unlock the car with a key without the resistor, the alarm will go off. Mine did NOT go off using my spare resistor key when locked with a fob. I just tried it.....
The chip pellet does not even go into the door lock cylinders, the key bottoms out leaving the chip pellet exposed. So it has nothing to do with the alarm.
Everyone usually uses the key fob to lock and unlock the doors so probably have never noticed this about the key.

walmart had the key blank just doesnt have the vats chip i think it was 1.99$ key cut included it allows to open doors if keys are locked in and other functions. Back in the tire battery automotive section desk. They have the correct key and will cut it for 2$ if you have your original vats keys. I did the same when i first got the car but dinos garage sells uncut keys with the correct key chips and had them cut it for the 1-2$ as well for a spare key. After having the vats turned off i havent seen if the no chip key will start the car. I measured my original chip and ordered one for 25$ C5 New VATS Ignition Key Blank 1997-2004 » Corvette Salvage

Never thought of Walmart having a non chip blank. Good to know if I loose the one I had the Chevy dealer make.
Never thought that Walmart does keys. How about that.
ITs a square key for door whichever but still works I haven't tried to start it yet with it but I can since I've had vats turned off thru the tune no more pull key wait 10 seconds or steering column locked. It's in the back tire section the key cutters at the desk for less then 2$ if you have original key. My car came with one key when I bought it I matched the ohms for vats and orders key blank for 25$ from dinos salvage and had Walmart cut it. However mine doesn't have a key fob the new one for 97-00 is 85$ and had to be genuine gm not a 15$ aftermarket key fob won't work. AutoZone had their brand and can look them up specific for vehicle.
I had it Dynotuned 3 weeks ago when I asked if he could raise the 2mph fuel cut off in the pcm parameters he said he wasn't sure where it was and said he'd just turn off vats to disable it. I also have an lmc5 50$ fuel cut bypass module but was still getting the messages pull key wait 10 seconds steering column locked after installing lmc5 and one time even did the fuel cut no messages. Frost told me could raise the mph but it would still read the messages on the dash and not have the fuel cut issue but I needed a steering column lock bypass module as well nothing specific. I was watching it get tuned he had the speed limiter raised to "250 mph" but when I asked if he new in the vats where the 2 mph fuel cut off blank reading was he wasn't sure and said he'd just turn off the vats should disable it. I seen thru hp tuners I think it was.
I'm not sure if the pull key wait 10 seconds is key chip related or not others said just raise the mph instead of "2 mph" to 250mph.

Always good to have a spare key available just in case you happen to lock yourself out of the car. Knowing my luck, it would happen in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night and no cell service would be available.
Heres the walmart 2$ access key and dinos new 25$ correct vats key i measured my stock key with ohmmeter to get correct key chip and cut for 2$ at walmart.

Well i tried to see if it would start with the spare key no chip and didnt crank. The tuner told me he would turn vats off as i told him i was having issues with the "pull key wait 10 seconds" "steering column locked" and getting 2mph fuel cut. It hasn't had that issue since having it tuned. I do have the lmc5 bypass module as well installed in the bcm. Was curious so it would still need the correct vats key to start with whatever he disabled as far as vats go.
The pull key wait 10 seconds is the column lock, which your LMC5 is solving.
You probably do still need the chip in your case because he turned VATS off in the tune, rather than by wiring in the resistors so the ignition switch constantly sees what it needs.
That small headed key is the later GM style. My Buick Century had a key like that. I might have to go try and get a spare cut and see if it will fire my car with a proper vats bypass. Interesting.
