Default Looking for New Engine

Not sure as to what engine I am wanting to get I was looking at the L92. I think I would prefer a cheaper iron block, but I’m not sure what the best choice would be.

I have a base model 2004. The engine before was a built LS1 with ~530 hp.

We need more information. What is your primary use for the car? What are your goals? Do you plan on forced induction? Lots of factors go into a decision like this.

I don't think anyone can really offer any great advice without some sort of budget in mind. Obviously there is a big difference between 1k dollar budget and a 10k dollar budget.

I daily drive the car and have a budget of under 5k for the purchase of the engine. I would really like to max out what I can get from n/a.

Doing some more research and the LQ4 looks like a good option. Are LQ4 and LQ9 the same engine accept for the LQ9’s piston head ?

Does GMPP Pace or Scoggin Dickey still sell ls crates?
Im assuming you want new? Not rebuilt, or junkyard truck engines?
Maabco is super cheap if thats what you want.
GM sells a 525hp crate LS3? May be more than 5k but its 100 percent brand new. Block, all of it.

Don't forget also, you can't throw any ole LS engine in your car without dealing with reluctor wheel differences. There are conversion boxes that have questionable usage and reliability.

Yep, LQ9 has flat top pistons which give more compression ratio and about 10 more horsepower.

LQ4 has dished pistons, everything else is the same.

Once read where someone ran both engines stock on engine Dyno, both tuned to run best made about 400 horsepower, most likely no accessories, so that’s not net horsepower.

Other than extra weight of iron block these could be a good replacement with updated tune.

What’s wrong with your existing engine?

Not having to pay for another block, crank, and heads leaves a lot of money for options.

AES stocks used Corvette parts, including complete engines. Based on your budget alone, here’s an example of what you can get:

And it lists for $4909.99 from GM Performance. 24 tooth reluctor, so as you say, made for the job. Looks like an excellent option if/when my LS1 goes pop!

I believe SDPC has a great deal on LS3 short blocks right now. IIRC, around $4,800.00+shipping.......

^ That would be a great price and the LS3 is a very good engine, whether it remains stock or you decide to mod it.

Default Thanks for all the help so far

Currently my plan is to get a L92 and then start light with a cam and intake. I think I’m going to get a L92/L94/L9H because it’s simply cheaper than the alternatives. Although the LQ4 is still an option if I find a good one.
My current engine blew and threw its guts all over he highway… it is past salvageable.

What happened to the engine that caused it to blow like that, maybe a missed gear?
