My son's '98 C5 (~100,000 miles) clutch is history. For the last couple of months every once in a while the clutch would not "respond" (as my son describes it). We checked and the fluid was low. After adding fluid the clutch would work normally. So... this became an ongoing issue for about two months. I would guestimate, he solved this problem by adding fluid ~4 times in a 2-3 mos. period. Then, no more, the clutch would not respond at all. I was out of the country when it finally went out. I had AAA towed it home until I was home from my business trip.
Our preferred garage, I call it the "hot rod shop" because most of the cars they work on are custom mod cars. Our C5 is scheduled to go in Monday for a clutch replacement. We buy our choice of clutch and pay the labor fees to install. They recommend this clutch.
ACT HD/Perf Street Sprung Clutch Kit - NS3-HDSS.
Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!! A while ago I watched a Youtube video in which "He" recommended a shield of some sort near the rear seal that should be replaced when the transmission and torque tube was dropped. He explained why his fabricated part was far superior. I'll go through my history to find it but I would appreciate ANY and ALL suggestions.
Is the car stock, or if not what mods does it have?
If stock and not going to do mods, I would get LUK brand clutch kit that is stock replacement for the Z06 with LS6 engine.
Apparently it is the company that made the original clutches in these cars and is from Germany and pronounced like the name Luke, not luck. Lol
The fact it lasted 100,000 miles is pretty good.
Also make sure to replace master and slave and put on a Katech remote bleeder, new pilot bearing, check torque tube bushing and replace if not in good shape.
Thank you for your response! We just bought the car ~8 mos ago and have no idea of any mods except that the car has been lowered. The shop has already ordered the ACT clutch. I'm OK with that. Fortunately, they did recommend replacing the master and slave cylinder.
