All depends on the definition of 'true American Sportscar'. Do not forget the 2 seat Thunderbird, the Avanti, the Nash/Healy and probably more. Unlike the others, the Corvette has survived Corporate attempts to tank the line. Real heroes at GM as referred to in the book, All Corvettes Are Red about the C5 build.

I bought my first C5 in 1999 at age 45. Really couldn't care less if someone thought I was an old man - the car sure made me feel like I was much younger.
I would not. They are not in the same class as a corvette as an American Icon. Just in longevity alone. The Viper comes and goes. The Corvette is constant. 70 years next year.
so your C5 is an icon but 300k VIPER ACR 128 is just a car right ?
I guess c5 corvette owners are not only old but also delusional.
Corvette has been here since 1953, A TRUE AMERICAN SPORTS CAR ICON.

I was hooked early because the kid across the street was spoiled and had an all metal flake blue ‘58. Naturally he was my idol, so at the tender age of 17, bought my own 1958 in 1972. Guess what…it was red, with the roof metal flake red!
Im now 67, and love my 2004 coupe. It’s not metal flake…. I’ll never sell it. When I’m, like reallllly old, I’ll park it the driveway, sip bourbon and listen to the radio. Cheers!

I was being rude just for fun. Other cars have come and gone,
not Corvette.
Anybody that has ever seen mine and made comment were very
impressed, regardless of age.
I had a kid, maybe 12 or something, come by to admire it.
He wanted me to start it up and rev the engine. He said it was really cool.
A couple of years ago I was walking up to it in the parking lot of a store, about 5 car lengths away from any other cars.
A guy that looked, maybe his late 70’s, saw me walking up to it.
"That is 1 beautiful machine” Not that I care about what anybody else thinks,
it’s nice to hear a compliment. A 12 year old kid likes it, an old guy,
They appeal to a wide range of people because some things are timeless.
He's right, Vipers come and go. They are the past, they were over weight and depended on the Europeans to get the motor right the last generation. Corvettes are timeless
I'm 69 and a I'm a fogie, boomer, fossil and a relic. I'd rather be any one those considering the way things are now. I'm on my 3rd Corvette; I had a '65 Coupe in high school (paid $1700.00) and a '62 in the mid '70's. I take most of the insulting comments on older people driving c5s with a grain of salt, considering the sources of those comments. I still do all of my own mechanical work, which is a lot more than I can say about a good part of the younger crowd. Incidentally, I don't have any jorts.
44yrs young, love the C5. My teenage sons & their friends like it too. Helps that it sounds badazz and has 550whp... I quite them 620 engine hp and they know that's a lot even by today's standards

Actually, the v6 imports with the coffee can exhaust is kinda passe these days. The up and coming sports cars are electric. The electric crowd looks at the v6 import crowd as dinosaurs.
I guess I'm struggling to know your definition of an ICON. Seems like all you care about is that the car is 70 years old.
Are Toyota Land Cruisers Iconic? They started a couple years before the Vette and are still going.
To me Iconic means
-Racing Heritage
-Instantly recognizable by the masses
-Respected by the driving community
-Large enthusiast community
I could care less about price, or if the car still being made.
Lots of cars are Icons.
Don't forget I own a C5 same as you!
Sorry I have a different opinion than some of you. I did not bad mouth the Viper. You gave you opinion and I gave mine. Looks like your definition of an Icon fits both makes, just the corvette is head and shoulders above the Viper.
haha
What about the Ford GT and the viper ? Made in North Korea?
LOL, for starters the GT is not made in America and the Canadian plant where it was produced (Multimatic) is not a 'Ford assembly plant' like Bowling Green is for Chevrolet (GM)
As for the Viper, it started out as a turd (fit and finish) and ended as a legitimate sports car with incredible muscle. But Dodge, like GM, once they got it right(remember the Pontiac Fiero) parts ways and says goodbye .......
I love the sound of a fart can in the morning………..

This is not being in the spirit on the Car Community in general. I don't bust on others, just because I don't care for their automotive choice, or their mods. I'm happy they are into it the Car scene.
With the EVs in the future, and the current generation not really into cars, times are changing. If we are going to keep the automotive culture alive, we have to be more inclusive.
