I'm new to the forum, and Corvette ownership, and hate that the car scrapes the ground so often. Mine is a 6 speed manual and when it scrapes it sounds like I've misclutched.
I understand the function of the air dam, and I've been searching threads to find out if installing a front splitter with openings for the air to get through can replace the air dam. My corvette is a manual shift, convertible that will only see life outside of the garage on the prettiest days of the year. So, no track racing and no 120 MPH jaunts. Just top down, clutching & shifting strolls on the back roads around here.
I believe you usually keep the center for cooling, and a splitter will just scrape more often. Mine is lowered, and I seldom scrape airdam, are you extremely low, or not going in/out at angles?
It is a disposable piece and flexible, made to scrape sometimes.
I have an ACI front splitter, and yes it replaces the center air deflector, as well as the 2 side deflectors.
The center portion (tray) channels air back and there is an air deflector at the rear of the tray that channels air up to the condenser and radiator.
The OEM center air deflector does scrape a lot normally and over time it will wear more and more material off and eventually need replacing, but otherwise it’s normal.
With the splitter you have to always be very aware of anything in the roadway, even more so if you are lowered, and curbs when parking, if you pull in head first.
There are other splitters that are the same functionality as the ACI, but it’s the only one I have used.
Thanks everyone for the input. At first I thought it was something that the PO had put on it, but after some research I learned that it is original equipment. I love the term "bottom feeder" for the C5 air movement!!
Welcome to the forum! Yes the air damn is stock, and yes, it will scrape. Splitters are cool, and have some advantages. However, ground clearance isn't one of them. If you're worried about ground clearance, I would avoid adding a splitter.
