I still have my original transmission. I heard RPM transmission is the best. I had an RPM 373 differential with a yank 3200ss converter installed about 2 months ago. When my transmission blows, I’m calling RPM.
So who currently builds a tough great performance automatic transmission? Lots of claims and options out there. Who has the best?
Hard to beat RPM. They've been proven for many years. When, and IF my 4L60E bites the dust, that's probably the only company I'll deal with. Have not had first hand experience with them, but never read any bad reviews, only good.....
I've never bought one, and have three pedals myself, but I've watched the Roadkill crew throw more than a couple of Gearstar transmissions into ridiculous situations and have them work flawlessly. Not inexpensive at $5K for a trans, but how much are other high performance autos?
Also have to note, that the Precision Transmission videos on Youtube have me convinced they could build a trans to handle virtually anything.
Thanks. I have the Z51 package with the 3:15 diff. Is the 3:73 final drive a big compromise in mileage by comparison?
I may lose some highway mpg, I’m not sure yet. Last time I calculated everyday driving, with the gear and converter, it was about 19mpg. I really like the combo, 373 gear just pulls in every gear, and the yank 3200 converter feels almost like stock, very tight converter with the 373 gear. Hit it from a dig, stall speed is right at 3200. In hot weather, my 305 tires stick pretty well, a 55-60 degree night, and a 2nd gear drop at 50mph will light the tires up, even with traction on. I have no drag times yet on this setup.
I used to get about 27mpg on the highway with my 3.15 gears. But I didn’t do this mod for gas mileage. If I get 24-25 highway, bonus.
cruising at 60mph=2000RPM
65mph=2200
70mph=2400
77=2600
81-82=2800
85-86=3000
I don't know the best. My FinishLine Performance tranny
with aYank SS torq 3200 converter. is 10 years old and still
performs well. I have won a lot of races with this transmission.
Good luck
I had an RPM stage V in my old nitrous fed C5. Had great performance great shifting and when it finally gave after 4 years of driving it like I stole it and track time I upgraded to a stage 6 and cost me.only 500. Great outfit damn great equipment. That oe slush box that it comes with sucks. And you can get them to give you really solid hard shift point but understand also that the quality of the stall converter will also dictate the performance of the transmission along with rear diff gearing. I was running the ZO6 3.42s . So it's not just changing the trans and off u go.
