Default Dash Defrost Grill loose

While working on my stereo replacement I needed to take off the defrost grill on the top of the dash and noticed that it was very loose. All of the tabs are intact and the grill itself looks to be in good shape but when you place it on the dash the tabs don't engage. It's almost as if the grill has shrunk or the opening in the dash has expanded. Any ideas how I can resolve this? I initially thought I would just buy a replacement grill but as I said, it doesn't look like there's any damage to the existing grill. Has anyone seen or heard of this problem before? If so, can it be fixed?

That's good because as those grills get brittle with age from being in the sun they won't break if they need to be removed and there's no stress on them being loose in the dash. Mine's been like that for years and it hasn't popped out while driving plus if the dash needs to be removed the loose grill makes that a little easier.

I had a shop remove mine while doing some work, and it had the same issue. I replaced it with a new one, but I still have the issue. I used a small bit of 3M double sided tape to keep it secure, but I couldn't find a way to fix it properly.

I was thinking of using a little of that butyl rubber tape. Same idea. Thanks for your response.

Just a thought - can you put a little piece of electrical tape, wrapped around the tab, to hold the grill in place? That may tighten it up just enough to where it is not loose.
