So took my first road trip in my 99 Vette. Paint flawless with 34k miles. In left hand lane with cruise control set at 73. As I approached slower traffic on the right lane a Semi in right lane makes evasive move into my lane forcing an elderly gentleman over and he panicked locking up brakes and coming to complete stop. I hit the brakes and cars went everywhere, in grass, etc. and I ended up very slightly bumping him. He was very apologitic and I told him it was ok, I saw what the semi did. I think he could have not stopped because the semi kept going, but the smudge on the nose rubbed off and he was really shook up so I told him if he's fine then I'm good and we got moving again. I took the next exit to check everything out. The basketball size smudge buffed off fine but I noticed the gap between the nose and the hood was a little narrower and the edge of the nose about 1/16" lower than the hood. Any ideas on how to fix? I'm thinking something may be slightly bent and want to line it back up. Thanks for any input. Paint appears to be fine. Thank goodness for all the wax 😁
When you say nose, I think you mean front bumper cover. Sounds like some of you tabs might have gotten slightly stretched. Perhaps the fender liner or another attachment point is out of place. You should check around the entire bumper cover. You gotta get on the ground and look.
Have you opened your hood yet? If not try, but do it gingerly. If the bumper cover shifted , the hood and bumper cover might rub. If it does don't force it. If you get you hood open look in the gap created by the hood open. Between the bumper cover and hood, there will be a line of screws in the bumper cover. Check those out, the plastic on the bumper cover around the bolts might have gotten torn. If it isn’t damaged too badly,You might be able to loosen the bolts and push it back into place and retighten the bolt with a washer.
There are plenty of Google videos on how to replace the front bumper cover. It might be better to watch a few. Words can only describe so much.
If you have or know a reputable body shop, ask for an estimate. If it’s a good shop and it takes five seconds to fix, they might just help you out or tell you how. They also will look it over and might catch something you haven’t seen. If you don’t have a reputable shop, go to a few. - It is time consuming but you might pick up some things and at least figure out what shop would be worth doing business with at a later date if needed.
Hope this helps and good luck!
Thanks MertyEOD for taking your time for such a detailed response. I did open hood VERY slowly after checking spacing and it opened fine. Wife says she "doesn't see it, but it's your baby" lol, so pics don't show it well. When we get back home from the trip I'll get it on the lift and check underneath. I've been watching YouTube videos on removing front bummer here on the beach and getting dirty looks from the better half. Hopefully the drive home is less eventful. Thanks again.
