How much current is it putting out? Most tenders are 1 1/2 to 2 amps. If the battery is pulling max current that the tender should put out, it will quite warm but not Hot. If you have an infrared temperature gun, what is the actual temperature?

Yes, it will get hot and yes it will freak you out but it is completely normal. The "rule of thumb" is 160 degrees or less. And as above get yourself a thermal gun, Besides being able to measure temperatures, the red laser dot will drive your cats wild.
It was never intended to charge a battery, that is what battery chargers are designed to do. A tender is designed to keep a fully charged battery from slowly discharging. Hope this helps.
My BT jr. does something every once in awhile that is a bit strange. Maybe once in every 20 times I plug it in, it will stay on red for several hours, and get warm. If I unplug it, and plug it in a 2nd time, it flashes green for several seconds, and then turns solid green. It stays solid green, unless I'm working on something in the interior, and I have the door(s) open for an extended period. Then it will start flashing green, but it never gets red again. It is always red if I plug it in right after driving it, and I attribute that to the underhood heat generated by the headers. Car charges fine, never a hint of a low battery. Posting this so it hopefully helps someone.......
