Drove C5 through drive thru and older woman said “woo hoo that’s a red Corvette, must be nice” in a tone that basically was whiny that someone has a Corvette and she doesn’t.
I said it’s actually old and not that expensive to get nowadays, she then said “like I said, must be nice”.
I didn’t say anything else, and just thought to myself “yes it is nice”
Passive-aggressive phrase used by jealous people who see themselves as victims. Commonly used by "have-nots" to guilt trip the "haves".
*guy pulls up in a 10 year old Corvettethat he worked his whole life for*
Jealous person in beat-upminivan: "must be nice to afford fancy sports cars!"
Haha this is one of the responses after searching the term must be nice, urban dictionary.
The value of the car is insignificant. There are probably countless "everyday" cars that go through that drive through worth more than an ls1 Corvette and nobody would think twice about them.
You drive an attention grabbing car, in an attention grabbing color. People's perceived value of it can be a lot higher than yours. Things like this, as petty as it is, is part of the game.
In other words, I’ve worked very hard for what I’ve got. How about you?
I was told years ago, don’t let anyone make you feel like you have to apologize for your success.

Some people are just jealous, whether for a good reason or because they assume what one person owns is beyond their reach. If they really stop and look at things logically, they would probably be surprised at what they thought was unobtainable is really less than a more pedestrian mode of transportation.
I don't think it's specifically your Corvette, but just the generality that you have a 2-door/2-seater sports car. It's most common that these would be a person's 2nd car, so "it must be nice" that you can have (at least) 2 cars for yourself where one of them is essentially a toy (regardless of value).
On the value front, almost 4 years ago I bought my '01 Z06 for UNDER $15k. Last year I bought my 2015 Audi A3 2.0T Quattro for the exact same price... and 3 years back we got my wife a 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD for $17k. So I guess the C5Z is our current cheapest car, but it's not "necessary" like the other 2 cars and therefore a splurge.

So now I need an addendum?
This is just my beater, oh and by the way we have 6 cars, many of which are more expensive than this one, so suck it!
I can see both points of view. I'm still leaning towards most people not thinking about the 2nd car theory and just blindly being corvette jealous.
Oh and for the record I'm just horsing around. We hardly live a lavish lifestyle compared to much of Corvette Forum.
The reality of it is I get 98% positive comments on the Corvette and every once in a long while a douchey comment.
Must be nice: I get the same "Thumbs up" or "Must be nice" irregardless which I drive: My '04 Vert or my '80 MGB....note: Both cars "combined" cost/value are significantly less than the cheapest new car available today!! That's life in the fast/slow lane!
TBF I ran around in a miata for a while and got the same hate. It's one thing to have a two seater and prove you are unencumbered by goblins. It is another to put the top down and have your lack of encumbrance on full display of the public. A rag top no matter how cheap is always gonna get some envy. Like a motorcycle even if it barely runs and is your only wheels. These "enviers" are probably rollin a 40k+ suv, so spare the pity party.
Unfortunately in today’s world, working hard and more importantly, working smart to enjoy things in life makes you “privileged”. Strangers see the results, they don’t see the work to gain the results.

Surprised you have not dumped the rubber "bumper", as many others have. Seems to be SOP for many owners.
The reactions I get to the car are almost always positive. I tend to ignore it on the rare occasion I get otherwise. Most of the people who make negative comments on the car have probably made a lot of poor decisions in their lives Nothing I say or do is going to change that. I don't feel guilty at all. I've consistently made good, responsible life choices. As such, I get to drive my very reasonably priced dream car.
Think about what it must be like to work an hour and get paid about 10 bucks. That doesn't fall in the, "Must be nice" category. Remember, she might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer if she's working a fast food drive through. Have pity, not anger. I just say, "Thank you." I'm also the guy who screams, "Nice directional fuckface!"

Jack: This MGB is 95% original (new hoses, new tires, new engine oil, new filters, new antifreeze, etc.) and will stay that way, like my '04 vert. Just my thing. But you are correct, many MGB owners do modify to one degree or another and I respect that. A joy to drive, none-the-less. L
