Looking for suggestions. I'm thinking of getting the adjustable (2 piece) wheel cribs to do oil changes. Which height should I get----8", 10", 12"? Also, any other comments from those that are using wheel cribs will be appreciated.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but it going to be challenging to do an oil change with wheel cribs. The C5 is so low to the ground. You would be much better off with something like a set of quick jacks that will get the car a bit higher in the air.
I recommend Race Ramps for raising the front up off the ground along with Roll Ups or Trak-Jax Ramps for the rear tires. This way you can easily slide a low-profile jack under the cradle to raise it up for oil drainage during an oil change.
Or, go the value route. Screw a couple of staggered 2 x 6’s together to drive up high enough to get the jack under it. Then set a couple jack stands in there and you’re good to go.
Has anyone hear tried the wheel cribs? I know they may not be the most convenient but I will feel safer. My main question remains... which size should I get ..8", 10" or 12". The are the adjustable 2 part Race Ramp wheel cribs.
Been contemplating race ramps myself. 10" seems like it might work. Would be a bit tight, but should be enough. No first hand experience though. Just a guess.
I have the 2 two piece ones that are 12" combined and I have the 2 12" solid units.
I prefer using the two piece units to first raise the car and set all 4 tires on the shorter ones.
I then raise the car the rest of the way and then use the solid ones and the combined ones for a true 12" lift under the tires.
Plenty of room to do an oil change.
In order to use them you need to jack up one side of the car at a time as on my Vette there is not enough room to jack up from the front or back initially unless you jack straight on the cross-member.
You have to remember as you raise the car the tires/suspension will drop so you have to get it pretty high to do the 12" ones in one try vs two tries doing the 6" units.
If I had to purchase again I would purchase 4 of the 12" two piece units so you have enough for two cars if needed.
I also find the 6 inch ones work well with a 2X10 across the tops to stand on to do engine work etc. if I'm using my Quick Jack for suspension maintenance where you cant use the race ramps.
I also have the roll up race ramps which work well for simple maintenance but not so good for oil changes as the oil drain plug is in the front of the sump.
If your using them you cant really jack up the back as once on the ramps the back of the car is too low for a rear jack under the cross member.
Thanks for this report. That's very helpful. Do you think I would have enough height with the 2 part 10" ones for an oil change? not sure my jack will go high enough for the 12".
