Hi guys. So I just got an alky control meth kit and smaller pulley 3.4 for my A&A. I was going to put this on but my shop doesn’t want to tune and dyno with the stock bottom end. I’m getting to that level where I need to beef up my internals. The car is sitting at 615 rwhp 8psi with the 3.8 pulley and a safe tune. So the question is do I swap internals for forged parts or just get an assembled short block. Looking at the costs for a forged rotating assembly is 2500-3200 for rods, pistons, crank and bolts. This obviously doesn’t include labor, machine work and gaskets. What short block would you recommend? I’m planning on moving over my 243 heads and ls6 intake manifold for the time being. When I decide to go crazier I’ll upgrade heads and move up to a Ysi.
I think most are going to recommend a built short block and for you to sell yours. The LS6 short blocks are selling for IMO a ridiculous amount of money for what it is.
Im kinda in a similar position but haven’t got a supercharger yet. I want the power but know it’s probably best if I wait and do the motor and supercharger together.
If the engine is still intact, you've got something functional with a good value which can be sold. Grab a completed iron block and avoid finding/trusting a local machine shop or waiting for parts due to supply chain issues.
I thought about the tuner not wanting to tune. They know their own limits and they also understand that customers blowing engines would be bad for business. So while it could conceivably take more abuse, I'd trust them so far.
Thanks for the input. I’m leaning towards towards an iron 408 short block or a crate LSX 376 B15. If I do the crate motor I can sell this beauty as a complete pull out. Compression test and leak down tests were performed 3k miles ago when I added the blower and cam. It’s in great shape!

I second this.
I just waited 11 months for pistons for my drag car, another 4 months for carb main bodies, and 13 weeks for a set of reversion plate. Engine parts are getting really hard to come by
I ordered a 383 stroker all forged iron block stage 3 from Thompson motorsports. It’s rated at 1150hp it’s a gen 4 block with gen 3 conversion kit and 24x reluctor. Ships today and they knocked off 1000 dollars for Black Friday. If anyone wants a top notch short block call Kyle at Thompson mororsports! This guys walked me through every part on this power adder block and the swap process for 45 mins. Carrillo pistons, k1 forged crank, Manley h beam rods, all balanced, all arp fastener, plugs, valley cover, timing chain, sprockets and timing cover. I’m super excited to do the swap. If anyone knows someone who wants an Ls6 short block let me know.
The PO a good friend of mine, when he needed a new engine, he ordered an aluminum stage 2 (stock GM crank with aftermarket forged rods and pistons) 5.7L short block from Thompson Motorsports. He was and I have been very pleased with the engine over the last several years.
